The pair were presented with the Shining Star Achievement in the Research category during an online awards ceremony held at 7 a.m. on December 9. The Shining Star Achievement in Research award is given in recognition of influential scholarly contributions in any discipline, typically in the form of scholarly journal articles that are published, or alternatively books, book chapters, or other expressions of scholarly collaboration. Prof. Tran Xuan Bach was born in 1984 and is currently vice head of the Health Economics Department at Hanoi Medical University. He possesses extensive experience in relation to research, surveillance, and evaluation of global health threats in the Asia-Pacific region. His work has won him numerous international and domestic awards in the past, including the Hopkins Center for AIDS Research's International Research Award. He has also published over 300 papers in a number of highly regarded international journals, including The Lancet, Bulletin of the World Health Organization, and AIDS and Behavior. Most notably, Prof. Bach is the youngest professor in recent decades to work at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, the world leader in terms of public health. According to details released by the university, he has extensive experience in advising various U.N. agencies, international organisations, and governments on issues such as global health and development in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, born in 1975 Prof. Tran Thi Ly was previously employed as a lecturer at Hue University, although she is currently working at the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin University in Australia. First arriving in Australia in 2001, Prof. Ly has gone on to produce extensive research on the international education sector, including writing the first English-language book on Vietnamese higher education. Winners of the Kovalevskaya Award 2020, a prize dedicated to outstanding female scientists, were announced at a ceremony held jointly by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Vietnam Women’s Union Central Committee. A team of female scientists from the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry under VAST, and Associate Professor, Dr Truong Thanh Huong, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Cardiology at the Hanoi Medical University, were honoured this year. The team studied and created many products with high applicability that have been used widely and served public healthcare, such as “Khuong Thao dan” (a drug for the treatment of arthritis, degenerative spine pain, and bone pain), Cordyceps Sinensis, and essential oils. The award is presented to Associate Professor, Dr Truong Thanh Huong, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Cardiology at the Hanoi Medical University (Photo: VNA) Meanwhile, Huong has made contributions to Vietnam’s health sector by conducting many scientific studies to improve treatment relating to cardiovascular disease. Speaking at the event, member of the Party Central Committee and President of the Vietnam Women’s Union Central Committee Ha Thi Nga said the award, named after Russian female mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya, is presented annually to honour female scientists posting remarkable achievements in scientific research and application. Vietnamese and Japanese firms receive support to expand operations The Japan Trade Promotion Organisation (JETRO) will host an online scheme on March 3 in Hanoi aimed at connecting Japanese businesses in the field of manufacturing and production, known as Monozukuri in Japanese term to facilitate co-operation amid the negative impacts caused the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a representative from the JETRO, the business matching programme will see the participation of 40 Japanese companies for the purpose of accelerating the development of the country’s supporting industry. At present, the scheme has received registration for 50 negotiations from enterprises from Japan, Vietnam, and Taiwan (China), whilst it is still receiving registration from businesses wishing to purchase and seek Japanese suppliers in the Monozukuri field until March 1. A recent survey conducted by the JETRO unveiled that Japanese businesses remain keen on the Vietnamese market as the country is viewed as an alternative investment destinations for Japanese enterprises looking to move away from China due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey indicates that approximately half of Japanese enterprises in the nation plan to expand their production activities, while roughly 70% of them seek opportunities to increase revenue in the local market. Most notably, 46.8% of Japanese enterprises unveiled that they have initiated plans to expand their business in the nation over the course of the next two years, with the expansion rate ranking fourth, the highest in the Asia-Pacific region. Japanese enterprises have therefore attributed their expansion to an increase in revenue in the domestic market and high growth potential.
