GPS collars will be fitted to 28 wild elephants in the Yok Don National Park in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, a workshop heard on June 29. The workshop was held by the World Wide Fund for Nature Vietnam and the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the city of Buon Ma Thuot to consult relevant parties on the project. Experts said the collars will allow rangers from the provincial centre for elephant conservation, animal rescue and forest protection and the Yok Don National Park to track the location of the elephants and predict their movements in an attempt to prevent conflicts with humans. It is the first time GPS collars for elephants have been used in Vietnam, they said, adding that it is critical for the project to receive help from experienced foreign experts as well as technical and financial support from the World Wide Fund for Nature and Animals Asia Foundation. A small student is choosing a textbook In its document to schools, the Department asked teachers and school managers to strictly implement the regulations on the use of textbooks and reference books in general educational institutions. Accordingly, the Department required teachers and managers not to abuse their positions to force or mobilize students and their parents to buy reference publications. In addition, educational institutions are not allowed to list and pack a set of textbooks with exercise books, reference books, outlines, and other documents besides the list of textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education and Training with the aim to introduce students and parents. Educational institutions need to arrange reasonable funding sources to buy textbooks for their school libraries. An inkwell used by King Khai Dinh (1916-1925) from An Dinh Palace in the central Hue Town received the second highest bid of EUR286,000. A pair of animal-shaped jade boxes with inlaid eyes were sold for EUR221,000. According to the auction house, they are from the 18th and 19th centuries. Ho Chi Minh City proposes construction of $6bn int’l transshipment port
Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have proposed the construction of a US$6 billion international transshipment port in outlying Can Gio District. The proposal was made by chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Phan Van Mai in his document sent to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Thursday. The investment into the port was originally suggested by MSC Group – the world's largest shipping group, Vietnam Maritime Corporation, and Saigon Port. The project is expected to have about 7.2 kilometers of wharves and cost approximately $6 billion. The port will be able to receive the world's largest container ship, which can carry 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, while its capacity will be around 10-15 million TEUs. The implementation of the project will be divided into seven phases, with the developers hoping that the first phase will be initiated in 2024 and put into operation in 2027.
