(VOVworld)- The British government has launched a tourism strategy for 2017 considering the hospitality industry to be a spearhead in the national economy because of the weak pound. The strategy corresponds with to the UN’s designation of 2017 as International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development. There will be campaigns to promote cultural and sports activities in the UK in 2017. The British government has emphasized specific highlights, themes, and events for each region of the UK. UK travel companies have promoted literary commemorations to attract tourists. This year, events featuring and retelling literary works and the lives of famous characters like Harry Potter and Sherlock Homes will be held. London 2012 Olympics organisers have released more than 120,000 hotel room nights back onto the open market, they announced. They confirmed that some 20 percent of the room nights they had reserved in London would be returned to hotels to offer up to other customers. The spaces had been reserved to provide accommodation for media, global sport federations, the International Olympic Committee, Games workers and sponsors. The rooms at more than 200 hotels, range from five-star to budget accommodation. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to flock to London for the July 27 to August 12 Games, whether ticket holders or not. As part of the bid to stage the 2012 Olympics, agreements had been struck with hotels to provide more than 40,000 rooms, representing more than 600,000 room nights during the period. HCMC - A project team from Georgetown University in the United States has suggested HCMC set up a convention and visitors bureau (CVB) to drive the city's tourism development, particularly for the MICE segment. The CVB team underlined a strong business need for such an organization in place at a seminar organized here last Friday by the HCMC chapter of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in HCMC. The team said in their presentation at the "Best Practices of San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau" seminar that the organization's sole responsibility was to promote and market HCMC as a destination for leisure and business travelers, conventions, conferences, tradeshows and events for the benefit of the stakeholders and the city. Local travel companies are urging improvements in advertising to make Vietnam tourism better known with updated information so as to cross out the impression that Vietnam offers nothing new to foreign tourists. Peddled wares can be seen in every country in the world, including developed economies. The thing that Vietnam needs to do is turn peddled ware shoulder poles (carrying poles) into the special characteristic to attract tourists, instead of the “threat to the tourism” that state management agencies need to eliminate.
