PM asks for timely, transparent COVID-19 vaccine distribution

The request was noted in Notice No.31/TB-VPCP dated February 25 along with other instructions that the Government leader made at a meeting of permanent Government members on pandemic prevention work. The Health Ministry must work with the Foreign Ministry, especially Vietnamese embassies abroad, to access vaccine suppliers. Vaccination for priority cases must be conducted quickly in accordance with the Government’s Resolution. The PM also agreed with proposals by a number of localities including Hanoi and Hai Phong on buying vaccines using private financial sources. Authorities of centrally-run cities and provinces are required to take the initiative in adopting suitable prevention and control measures based on the level of risk in each area, while ensuring smooth flows of goods, production and trade, thus minimizing negative impacts on trade and production and people’s lives. The PM also demanded the strict enforcement of the 5K principle, especially the wearing of face masks, and pandemic prevention rules at workplaces, factories and trade and public facilities. Authorities of pandemic-hit localities, especially Hai Duong and Hai Phong, must continue contact tracing, quarantining and testing in order to prevent any outbreak from spreading. The Transport Ministry was assigned to partner with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Health Ministry to issue regulations on ensuring safety in transportation to/from and in pandemic-hit areas, particularly in key economic areas such as Hai Phong, Quang Ninh and Hai Duong. The MoIT will be responsible for working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Health Ministry to regulate the procedures for buying farm produce from pandemic-affected areas. The PM assigned Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh to  direct the repatriation of citizens from abroad and conduct timely quarantine in line with regulations. Source: VNA …

Vietnamese peacekeeper plants vegetables in South Sudan

Son was sent to Aweil Base in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State in November of 2019, which is around 700km from the capital city of Juba. At that time, the dry season in South Sudan had just begun, and the outside temperature was normally 50-60 degrees Celsius. A month after he arrived in Aweil, the first COVID-19 infection case in the world was detected. It was not easy to find vegetables in the local markets, and he thought that self-growing vegetables was the only solution for him to have vegetables. The Vietnamese officer used seeds that he had brought from Vietnam. He created a small garden with surrounding fences and collected fertile soil by wheelbarrow from a site 300 meters from the place where he lives for vegetable planting. He used parts of a fire fighting vehicle to cover his garden to ease the heat so that his vegetables could grow. Son planted numerous species of vegetables, such as spicy cabbage, cowpea, jute, okra, water spinach, green luffa, tomato, etc. He also grew several types of flowers around his living place. The efforts of the Vietnamese peacekeeper brought him joy and happiness, not only because he could give vegetables to colleagues and locals in Aweil, but he was also able to share the experience of vegetable planting with them, contributing to promoting the good images of Vietnamese soldiers in South Sudan. Timber in need of identified strategy

Since Vietnam’s timber exports are on the rise, securing supply chains for raw materials is crucial. Photo: Le Toan By the end of 2020, Nguyen Trong Hieu and seven other production households representing the Lien Ha handicraft village in Hanoi’s Dan Phuong district had been supplying the market mostly with beds and wardrobes, mainly to furniture store Tan Vinh Cuu JSC (Tavico) in the southern province of Dong Nai. Hieu told VIR, “We are gradually creating links between production households in Lien Ha and furniture manufacturers in the south to promote and sell our products.” However, as long as the southern market remains unfamiliar with traditional handicraft products from the north, Lien Ha can certainly not sell its products immediately. The advantages of its craftsmanship or the use of proper and high-quality materials cannot offset the cost of transporting from Hanoi to Dong Nai. “The important factor for these products is to have a unique design, but we cannot always achieve it,” Hieu explained. The emergence of Lien Ha village’s products at Tavico has attracted the attention of other manufacturers, contributing to creating new awareness for traditional craft villages about the legal use of timber. This association process can help craft villages build brand names and values through activities that capture market trends, the importance of designs, and the demand of domestic consumers. Weak links There are already several link models between craft villages and manufacturers in Vietnam, some of which were born when they realised that such cooperation would foster survival to withstand the pandemic, even before taking sustainable development into account. However, these models are still very new, focusing on a few timber suppliers and not meant for export, which would benefit the entire value chain the most. “Vietnam has a weak and inactive link system when it comes to wood billets and other raw materials,” said Tran Thien, director of …
