Domestic Press Highlights (14-08-2006) Youth Union fetes top scorers on graduation exams Nguyen Van Phong, deputy secretary to Ha Noi's Youth Union said that the union would host a ceremony to praise the first 93 laureates for achievements in graduation exams at 42 Ha Noi based colleges and universities held between August 20 and 22. The Youth Union said that three years ago, the union organised ceremonies to praise about 309 first laureates. The union estimated that about 30 per cent were employed by State-owned offices; 26 per cent at foreign investment companies; and 40 per cent went on to further studies or to become lecturers at local colleges, universities. The top target of the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange (VAVA) is to assist and improve the lives of AO victims. With many ways to collect the help from domestic and international communities, the association has built up a fund worth billions of VND. Chemical war launched by the US left heavy consequences to people's health and the environment in Vietnam. Meanwhile, a majority of AO victims are leading a hard life. According to scientific documents from the US, the number of people who was exposed with AO is estimated at 4.8 million. The Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, War-Invalids and Social Affairs says 600,000 people have enough conditions to enjoy the state preferential policies. In 2006, VAVA spent 6.6 billion VND assisting 271,186 AO victims nationwide.
