MAR 2: Vietnam confirms 11 more coronavirus cases, one village put on lockdown

Vietnam reported 11 additional Covid-19 infections on March 2, including 10 cases in a village in the northern province of Hai Duong, the country's pandemic epicenter. Tightening control over precautionary measures remains active in many parts of Vietnam. Photo: VNExpress The newest infections drove up the tally in Vietnam to 2,472, including 1,892 convalescents. The latest movement of Covid-19 brought Kim Dinh village of more than 7,500 people into lockdown status for 14 days starting March 1. More than 58,000 people have so far been under quarantine at hospital, in concentrated facilities, and at home. In the past few days, the new cases were found in Hai Duong and the southern province of Dong Thap [from Vietnamese people returning from Cambodia]. The newly-infected cases in Dong Thap have prompted immediate action by regional provinces that border with Cambodia like An Giang, Tay Ninh and Kien Giang. Tightened control over immigration procedures has been required and more border patrols have been conducted. Meanwhile, other affected localities namely Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Hoa Binh, Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Binh Duong, Hung Yen, Bac Giang, Gia Lai, Bac Ninh, and Quang Ninh have undergone from seven to 17 days without new cases. The temporary containment of Covid-19 in some areas have enabled the ever pandemic-hit cities and provinces to resume economic activities. Charges were also filed against nine leaders of companies appraising the prices of medical equipment, the local media reported. Chu and four others‑‑ Ho Phuong Quynh, ex-member of the Can Tho Department of Health’s project management board; Nguyen Duy Hung and Nguyen Quoc Viet, ex-employees of BTC Valuation Joint Stock Company and Ta Thuong Xuan, ex-employee of Mediconsult Vietnam Joint Venture Co., Ltd‑‑are under house arrest. Meanwhile, Phi; Hoang Thi Thuy Nga, former chairwoman of the establishment council of Neo Success Journey Group (NSJ Group); Le Huy Binh, former general director of NSJ Group; Luong Tan Thanh, ex-member of the Can Tho Department of Health’s project management board; Doan Thi No, former head of the project department at LTQ High Technology Co., Ltd and Le Thanh Hung, a salesman of NSJ Group, are in police custody. According to the Ministry of Public Security, they were allegedly involved in two projects to tender medical equipment at the Can Tho Cardiovascular Hospital and the Can Tho Children's Hospital. According to the feasibility study for the first phase of the airport project approved by the Government, investors who want to supply services at the airport would be chosen by the Ministry of Transport. The capital needed for these service facilities is estimated at VND5.93 trillion, which will be mobilized by investors. According to the Ministry of Transport, the capital mobilization through tenders is feasible. A representative of the ministry’s Planning and Investment Department said that under Government Decree 05/2021 on the management and operation of airports and a decision approving the Long Thanh International Airport project, investors of service facilities at airports must be chosen through bidding to ensure fairness and transparency for enterprises and that enterprises in the aviation sector will not be prioritized. The ministry has assigned the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to draft a circular on the bidding and concession of service provision at the airport. National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines had earlier proposed the Ministries of Transport and Planning-Investment and the Commission for the Management of State Capital at Enterprises allow it to invest nearly VND10 trillion to become a ground services provider for aviation fuel, in-flight meals, duty-free sales and ground technical, cargo terminal, aviation logistics and waiting lounge services at the airport.
