The sweeping ruling by the court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, was set to alter American life, with nearly half the states considered certain or likely to ban abortion. Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas suggested the court's reasoning could also lead it to reconsider past rulings protecting the right to contraception, legalizing gay marriage nationwide, and invalidating state laws banning gay sex. As the day progressed, the number of demonstrators outside the Supreme Court increased substantially. The fenced-off area in front of the high court was filled largely with those demanding abortion rights. Crowds carried posters with slogans such as "Abort SCOTUS." One protester carried a placard that said "limit guns, not women" in reference to another Supreme Court decision this week expanding gun rights. Earlier in the afternoon, a supporter of Friday's ruling said: "The thing that 'my body, my choice' advocates don't get is that the aborted baby never had a choice." Additional oil spike impacts cannot be ruled out
Marcel Schröder, Economist, Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department Asian Development Bank At the beginning of the conflict, the crude oil price breached $130 per barrel in March, the highest since 2008. Since then, it retreated to about $100 in April, before rising again to $120 following the European Union’s partial ban on Russian oil in May. Some worry that the oil price could spike to $200 per barrel in the coming months and how such a shock would impact the economic prospects of Asia’s developing countries. While many institutions, including ours, project a significantly higher oil price in 2022 compared with 2021, these predictions do not foresee $200 per barrel because they attach a low probability of a sudden shock to the global oil supply. A sudden shock is unlikely given the EU’s decision to gradually phase out Russian oil imports by the end of 2022, allowing an orderly transition to alternative supplies and keeping prices stable and affordable for … [Read more...] about Additional oil spike impacts cannot be ruled out
Vietnam tennis ace reaches new height on world ranking
Nam has climbed 29 places after the ATP included the third M15 title he won in Tay Ninh two weeks ago. The 25-year-old is in the best form of his career so far, having won all three of his most recent tournaments. The three titles helped Nam jump 113 places on ATP rankings in just three weeks, from 477th on June 6 to 364th on June 27. This is also Nam's highest position on the world ranking to date. In late 2018, he reached the 385th position, but then the Covid-19 pandemic prevented him from playing in both domestic and international tournaments. There was a moment when Nam was close to exiting the top 1000. There are also five other Vietnamese players in the world rankings, but all of them remain outside the top 1,000, namely Vu Ha Minh Duc (1,516th), Nguyen Van Phuong (1,586th), Trinh Linh Giang (1,698th), Tu Le Khanh Duy and Nguyen Dac Tien (both at 1,801st). … [Read more...] about Vietnam tennis ace reaches new height on world ranking
Afghan quake kills 950, toll seen likely to rise
Photographs on Afghan media showed houses reduced to rubble, with bodies swathed in blankets lying on the ground. Helicopters were deployed in the rescue effort to reach the injured and fly in medical supplies and food, said an interior ministry official, Salahuddin Ayubi. "The death toll is likely to rise as some of the villages are in remote areas in the mountains and it will take some time to collect details." Wednesday's quake was the deadliest since 2002. It struck about 44 km (27 miles) from the southeastern city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGC) said. Most of the confirmed deaths were in the eastern province of Paktika, where 255 people were killed and more than 200 injured, Ayubi added. In the province of Khost, 25 were dead and 90 had been taken to hospital. Haibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of the ruling Taliban, offered his condolences in a statement. Mounting a rescue operation could prove a major test for the … [Read more...] about Afghan quake kills 950, toll seen likely to rise

MoF proposes further cut to environmental protection tax for petrol
A customer buys petrol at a petrol station of Vietnam National Petroleum Group (PLX) in Ha Noi. Deputy Minister of Finance Ta Anh Tuan speaks to local media about this issue. Since the beginning of the year, gasoline prices have fluctuated greatly. What measures has the MoF introduced to stabilise petrol prices? World petroleum prices have had complicated fluctuations from the beginning of 2022 until now, due to the recovery of large economies in the world along with impacts from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Covid-19 pandemic. The MoF, a price managing agency of the Government, is very worried about the impact of increased gasoline prices on controlling inflation in 2022. To stabilise gasoline prices and minimise the negative effects of the petrol price increases, the ministry has recommended that Government and the National Assembly Standing Committee reduce some kinds of tax imposed on gasoline products. The ministry has submitted proposals to the National Assembly … [Read more...] about MoF proposes further cut to environmental protection tax for petrol
Part 2: A war of justice
Victory gained by blood As soon as Pol Pot force took power in Cambodia in April 1975, they set their face against the Cambodian people and their revolutionary cause, killing millions of people, destroying all social bases and driving Cambodia toward genocidal disaster. More seriously, they trampled on the good values of the traditional solidarity and friendship between the two countries and the two peoples of Vietnam and Cambodia, by waging a bloody war, seriously encroaching upon Vietnam’s territory, and causing heinous crimes against the Vietnamese people. Responding to the urgent call of the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation and the Cambodian people and implementing President Ho Chi Minh’s thought of “Helping our friends is helping ourselves,” the Vietnamese Party, State, military and people stood alongside with the Cambodian armed forces and people to crush down on the Pol Pot regime while exercising their legitimate right to self-defense to protect the … [Read more...] about Part 2: A war of justice
Argentine courts to try Maradona doctors, nurses for homicide
Eight people who took care of soccer legend Diego Maradona will be tried in Argentina courts for homicide, according to a ruling released on Wednesday following an investigation into his November 2020 death due to cardiac arrest. In the 236-page document seen by Reuters , the judge in charge of the case questioned "the behaviors - active or by omission - of each of the accused which led to and contributed to the realization of the harmful result." The ruling said that eight people including doctors, nurses and a psychologist who cared for Maradona at the time of his death are accused of "simple homicide," a serious charge that means taking a life with intent. A medical board appointed to investigate Maradona's death concluded in 2021 that the soccer star's medical team acted in an "inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner." Maradona was considered one of the greatest soccer players in history, though the diminutive player nicknamed "Pelusa" for his long mane of hair and … [Read more...] about Argentine courts to try Maradona doctors, nurses for homicide
