Malaysia appoints Director General of National Security Council
Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia has appointed Defence Forces chief Zulkifeli Mohd Zin as the first Director-General of the National Security Council (NSC). Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the appointment took effect on August 15, stressing that the assignment is part in the government’s effort to ensure security bodies’ cohesive coordination. However, Zahid said senior police officers could be made NSC director-general in the future. The NSC includes the Prime Minister serves as the President of the council, a Deputy Prime Minister serves as Vice President of the council, and the Ministers of Defence, Home Affair, Telecommunication and Multimedia, the Chief of the Prime Minister’s Office, the commander of armed forces, and the inspector-general of police as members. The council is considered to be powerful as it has the right to declare curfew in any areas in the country. Seminar on how Vietnam prepare for its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council
CPV: The Honolulu-based Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies and the Institute for International Relations under the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs are co-hosting the seminar titled "United Nations Security Council: Role of a non-permanent member" from December 11-14, in Hanoi to help the country prepares for its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (SC) in the 2008-2009 period. Participants in the seminar represent a broad range of Vietnamese government agencies, each of whom will be called upon to contribute to the formulation of Vietnam's positions on issues of international peace and security that come before the SC. Through the use of simulation exercises and discussions, the seminar will sharpen the participants' abilities to assist senior policy makers by quickly developing practical ideas and recommendations appropriate to the role of a SC member. Italy supports Vietnam’s bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council in the 2008-2009 term
State President Nguyen Minh Triet has emphasised Viet Nam's desire to beef up trade ties with Italy. While receiving Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Massimo D'Alema in Ha Noi on October 8, President Triet said Viet Nam will work to maintain its economic growth and ensure an open investment environment for foreign investors. The State leader also expressed his delight at the motorbike maker Piaggio's building of a factory in Viet Nam, hoping that the move will create a new wave of Italian investment into the Southeast Asian country.
