Downpours kill three in northern Vietnam
Two people in Tuyen Quang were buried by landslides while the person in Hoa Binh was swept away by flash floods, the National Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control announced Tuesday, without elaborating. Landslide and flash floods have destroyed almost 260 houses in the northern highlands, including over 100 in Tuyen Quang, 50 in Yen Bai and 40 in Ha Giang. Floodwaters damaged 9,500 hectares of rice fields in several localities, with Hanoi suffering the most, losing more than 4,000 hectares, followed by Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho with 1,500 hectares each. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - Hanoi and other northern provinces were inundated following heavy rains on May 23 and 24 that have caused human and property losses. Hanoi's Hoang Mai district recorded rainfall of over 130 mm from May 23 night, followed by Hai Ba Trung district at 100 mm, and Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Long Bien districts at 80 mm. Traffic jams have been seen in Ngo Xuan Quang, Co Linh, Ngoc Lam and Duc Giang roads in Long Bien, and many other streets in the capital city. Downpours, landslides and flooding have caused serious human and property losses to localities. As of 5pm on May 24, the natural disasters killed three in the mountainous provinces of Tuyen Quang and Hoa Binh, and injured four others in Tuyen Quang. Vietnam reports additional 1,323 Covid-19 infections on Tuesday
An additional 1,323 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed on Tuesday, raising the national tally to over 10.71 million, according to the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry's report, most of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 33 out of 63 localities in the country with some localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (321), Vinh Phuc (98), Phu Tho (94), Yen Bai (58), and Quang Ninh (52). As of Tuesday evening, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to over 10.71 million. The country now stands 12th among 227 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
