Noodle soup with signature crab meatball in Ben Thanh Market

Located at 4 Phan Boi Chau Street, near the Le Loi - Phan Boi Chau intersection, District 1's Ben Thanh market area, the food stall was well known as the stomping ground of many foreign visitors, overseas Vietnamese and artists prior to the pandemic. Unlike other versions of crab noodle soup, or bun rieu , the dish here consists of a big chunk of fried tofu, congealed duck blood, a slice of tomato and its huge, signature crab meatball instead of the typically lumpy crab meat with small bite-size pieces on top. It would seem the cook aims to preserve all original flavors pertaining to this dish, allowing guests to enjoy the rich and soft tofu, chewy blood jelly and firm, tasty crab meatball and thin rice vermicelli. The dish is served with a plate of special fish sauce, chili, shrimp paste and tamarind dipping and a plate of fresh split morning glory, mung bean sprouts, thin strips of banana blossom, cilantro and basil leaves. Mai Thi Lien, 60-year-old owner of "Bun Rieu Ganh", has always been loyal to the traditional soup taste for over 40 years with her mother’s recipe. "The noodle soup is well seasoned. To add sourness, we do not use lime or kumquat juice but tamarind instead," Lien said. Even though the price per serving is VND55,000 ($2.4), considered higher than at other stalls in the city, Lien claims she is not thrifty when spending money on ingredients since when it came to good food, it was quality that counted. Besides, inner-city rent further explains the higher price. "In the past, it used to be a street vending business, my customers had to borrow seats from nearby stalls. So seven years ago, I started to rent a fully equipped place with seats and air conditioners and needless to say, the fee is exorbitant," she said. Somber start to 2021 as 33,600 businesses dissolve, suspend operations

According to the Department of Business Registration under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the first two months of the year saw 33,611 firms quit the market and around 18,100 new companies established. The number of companies dissolved or suspending operations marked an 18.6 percent year-on-year increase, the department said. Of these, 21,636 firms have temporarily suspended operations, 8,380 have halted operations to complete dissolution procedures and more than 3,595 dissolved. Those halting operations were in various sectors including retailing, lodging and catering services, tourism, and construction. They are reassessing their situation, watching the market and looking for new ideas and policies before making a final decision on whether or not they will shut down their business permanently, the department said. It noted that the number of dissolved businesses, mostly in sectors like electricity, water, gas production and distribution, warehousing and mining, underwent a 28 percent year-on-year surge. The number of new companies, meanwhile, decreased 4 percent year-on-year, and that of those returning to the market down nearly 8 percent against the same period last year at around 11,000. Businesses returning back to the market were mostly in sectors negatively hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, like art, entertainment and education, and lodging and catering services, mining, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Some less vulnerable sectors like electricity, water, cooking gas, medical and several social services saw a surge in the number of newcomers compared to the same period last year. This was also true of the real estate sector. Explaining the situation, the department said that these firms wanted to take advantage of the foreign capital flowing in and the shift happening in production chains. …

V. League club agrees to compensate Italian coach

"We will follow FIFA’s verdict in this case," Pham Nguyen Hong, director of Thanh Hoa Province Culture, Sport and Tourism Department and chairman of Thanh Hoa Football Federation, said. After being sacked by Thanh Hoa for underwhelming results at the start of V. League 2020, Lopez brought the arbitration to FIFA. The 47-year-old coach claimed Thanh Hoa had violated the two-year contract he signed with the club previously by not compensating him following its termination. After nearly a year, FIFA awarded the case to Lopez and his assistant, forcing Thanh Hoa to pay them $187,000. The club will have to complete the payment within 45 days or be banned from signing any new players, domestically or internationally and in the worst case, demoted. Thanh Hoa will not bring this case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), since their winning chance is thin. If the club fails to make a case, they would have to pay another $30,000 in court fees. Previously, they filed an appeal against Senegalese player Idrissa Sega Cisse but lost. As a result, Thanh Hoa still had to pay Cisse $58,420 in compensation and $20,000 in court fees. Thanh Hoa is currently waiting on Lopez to provide them the necessary details in order to complete the transaction. The club’s new sponsor stated it would not pay for this case since it happened before it came on board. Therefore, the responsibility belongs to Thanh Hoa Football Federation. Before coaching Thanh Hoa, Lopez had managed many academy squads for Italian clubs like Atalanta and ACF Fiorentina as well as clubs in Eastern Europe and Asia. …
