Vietnam War vet uses French niche to claim Agent Orange justice

Nga came online with her silver hair in rollers."My hair is way too long now. I have not made time for a haircut yet," she said, explaining the hair rollers in a video call with VnExpress International from her apartment in Paris, where she lives by herself. At almost 80, Nga gives herself no time to rest. She is busy with indictments, statements, speeches and interviews, especially since last January when her name became a byword for a doughty fighter. On January 25, Nga’s profile shot up among millions interested in the Vietnam War in general and Agent Orange in particular. That day, she officially filed a suit against 14 companies that supplied the U.S. Army with the notorious, toxic defoliant during the Vietnam War. Studies have shown that they knew it was toxic but decided to make it for profit anyway. The case was filed in the southern Paris suburb of Evry. The defendants in Nga’s case are on top of a Who’s Who list in international agriculture, like Monsanto and Dow Chemicals. She has accused them of being responsible for physical ailments and mental suffering sustained by her, her children and countless others, as well as for severe damage done to the environment."This is not my trial alone, this is not my fight alone. By now, the name Tran To Nga should only be a symbol. This is a fight for the people, for truth," she said.Nga suffers from certain typical Agent Orange effects, including type 2 diabetes and an extremely rare insulin allergy. She has contracted tuberculosis twice and a cancer once. She lost one of her daughters to a malformation in the heart. She has also suffered Alpha Thalassemie, which results in impaired production of hemoglobin, the molecule that carries oxygen in the blood, and her daughter and grandchild have the syndrome. Belgian expert values Vietnam’s cocoa for global chocolate production

Safarian, who is also the honorary consul of Belgium in Ho Chi Minh City, stated that Belgian businesses are willing to provide necessary financial support to Vietnamese farmers by purchasing their various cocoa products to revive the agricultural product market as the sector strives to move past the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Belgian Ambassador Paul Jansen was in agreement with this  view, emphasising that there exists great potential for Vietnamese chocolate to gain a reputation as a high-quality product in the international market due to its efforts to include new and unique flavours, such as local fruits. The Belgian diplomat pointed out that amid the global market facing an array of challenges, Vietnam can develop a range of unique and high-quality cocoa products, contributing to attracting additional chocolate manufacturers and customers from around the world. The Vietnam Cocoa Conference was held within the framework of a strategic partnership agreement on agriculture between the Governments of Vietnam and Belgium, in co-ordination with the Embassy of Belgium and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The conference aimed to provide an ideal venue for policymakers, researchers and international development partners to share their expertise to develop the domestic cocoa industry in a sustainable manner, thereby building a unique brand for local cocoa products among the global market. …

In Vietnam, students’ vaping sounds alarm bell

T.K., a high school student in Ho Chi Minh City’s Phu Nhuan District, opens his vape and adds some drops of oil. “There are no tastes I’ve never tried. Among all, chocolate flavor is the best,” he told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper after taking a long drag then exhaling slowly. Vaping has been sneaking into schools with a kit affordably ranging from VND120,000 to VND150,000 (US$5.19 to $6.49) in form of a lipstick, pen or USB. E-liquid is diverse in flavors, from strawberry to orange, mango which contains nicotine and cannabis. “I tried this in my eighth grade” On a winter day in the southern metropolis, smoke billowed an air-conditioned coffee shop on Nguyen Thai Binh Street in Tan Binh District where a group of schoolboys in their uniforms gathered for vaping. “Your eyes must feel stinging. This place is exclusive for vapers like us,” one of those schoolboys told Tuoi Tre’s reporter. Exhaling chillingly while spinning an e-cigarette around his fingers, T.K. said he started using vapes at eighth grade. “I tried for fun and felt quite dope at the first time. Now I get addicted to it and become the best smoker of my group,” he said proudly. At school, they smoke in toilets yet as teachers start inspecting, these schoolboys have to gather at cafes for vaping. T.K. opened his vape and added some drops of oil. “There are no tastes I’ve never tried. Among all, chocolatey flavor is the best,” K. told Tuoi Tre after taking a long drag then exhaling slowly. He has tried almost all kinds of vapes available and traded them if no longer interested. “I cannot stick with a vape kit for so long. I am urged to upgrade. There was a time I pledged my motorbike for VND10 million ($433) to buy this vape,” K. added. H.T.H, an 11th grader, said he knew all about e-cigarettes’ harms. “We buy them online, from sites certified by vaping communities which sell quality products. Is there …
