VNPT has moved through the years from traditional telecoms to a premier digital service provider From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the digital arteries of Vietnam’s economic framework, the group (VNPT) has redefined its role. No longer just a traditional telecommunication powerhouse, it is now Vietnam’s premier digital service provider, echoing a global shift in focus from cables and calls to bits and bytes. This is illustrated in recent performance results, with consolidated revenues for the first half of this year estimated at $1.11 billion, with an anticipated pre-tax consolidated profit of $92.7 million. In an assessment by the Vietnamese government, VNPT’s restructuring and overhaul has “essentially achieved its set objectives and expectations”. Amended Capital Law to govern the city-within-a-city model
Decentralization is key for local governments to be able to fulfill their tasks. The draft of the amended Capital Law has raised public concerns about the development of cities within a city. The Hanoi Times has received expert feedback on the issue. Architect Dao Ngoc Nghiem, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Urban Planning and Development: Special mechanism needed for city-within-a-city model Hanoi aims to urbanize five rural districts to make them urban districts by 2025 and two more later. Now, the concept of the city-within-city model is being introduced by urban developers. Previously, there was no city subordinate to a first-tier city. The law stipulated that only a province has its subordinate cities. In 2016, the first city-within-city was established, Thu Duc, a submunicipal unit of Ho Chi Minh City, one of the nation's five first-tier cities. Taiwan expects to deploy two new submarines by 2027, security adviser says
Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has made the indigenous sub program a key part of an ambitious project to modernize its armed forces as Beijing stages almost daily military exercises to assert its sovereignty. Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen, who initiated the program, is expected to launch the first of eight new submarines on Thursday under a plan that has drawn on expertise and technology from several countries - a breakthrough for diplomatically isolated Taiwan. Admiral Huang Shu-kuang, Tsai's security adviser, who is leading the program, said a fleet of 10 submarines - which includes two Dutch-made submarines commissioned in the 1980s - will make it harder for the Chinese navy to project power into the Pacific. "If we can build up this combat capacity, I don't think we will lose a war," Huang this month told an internal briefing on the project, which was attended by Reuters . Huang said the first submarine, with a price tag of T$49.36 billion ($1.54 … [Read more...] about Taiwan expects to deploy two new submarines by 2027, security adviser says
Gov’t pushes for private vehicle restriction in big cities
In an action program on ensuring traffic order and safety it issued last week, it exhorted the cities to prioritize investment in public transport, especially mass transit. It called on them to create road maps to gradually limit the use of private cars and motorbikes in the inner-city areas, and better manage the use of sidewalks to ensure that pedestrians have the space required to easily access public transport. The program also sought guarantees from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City that their metro systems would be completed on schedule, adding they need to complete bus rapid transit systems and link them with the metros. In April last year the government had tasked the country's five biggest cities - Da Nang, HCMC and Can Tho being the other three - with making plans to restrict motorbikes in downtown areas. The centrally governed cities have until 2030 to either ban or restrict motorbikes in certain areas. They have also been instructed to study and develop a scheme to … [Read more...] about Gov’t pushes for private vehicle restriction in big cities
