(VOVworld) - Intelligence officials in Britain, France, Australia and south-east Asia are trying to identify Islamic State (IS) militants who appeared in a video showing the murder of US aid worker Peter Kassig and a group of Syrian soldiers. Paris prosecutor François Molins identified one of the men in the video as Maxime Hauchard, from a village in Normandy. Hauchard converted to Islam and left France in August last year for Syria. He had appeared in an interview saying that he was being trained to become an IS militant. Mollins doubts that there are any other French men in the video. A third militant is suspected to be Nasser Muthana, a student and son of Yemeni-British electrical engineer, Ahmed Muthana, who lives in Wales. … [Read more...] about IS militant executing American aid worker identified

Islamic State has recruited at least 400 children in Syria in the past three months and given these so-called "Cubs of the Caliphate" military training and hardline indoctrination, a monitoring group said on Tuesday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the children, all aged under 18, were recruited near schools, mosques and in public areas where Islamic State carries out killings and brutal punishments on local people. One such young boy appeared in a video early this month shooting dead an Israeli Arab accused by Islamic State of being as spy. A French police source said the boy might be the half-brother of Mohamed Merah, who killed three soldiers, a rabbi and three Jewish children in Toulouse in 2012. "They use children because it is easy to brainwash them. They can build these children into what they want, they stop them from going to school and send them to IS schools instead," said Rami Abdulrahman, head of the British-based Observatory. Islamic State declared a … [Read more...] about Islamic State recruits 400 children since Jan: Syria monitor
The Islamic State group on Wednesday shot down a warplane from the US-led coalition over northern Syria, a monitoring group said, with the jihadists claiming to have captured a Jordanian pilot. "We have confirmed reports that IS members took a (non-Syrian) Arab pilot prisoner after shooting his plane down with an anti-aircraft missile near Raqa city," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The IS branch in Raqa published photographs on jihadist websites purporting to show its fighters holding the captured pilot, with a caption identifying him as Jordanian. Several photographs were released showing the pilot, wearing only a white shirt, being carried from a body of water by four men, and also on land, surrounded by about a dozen armed men. Another photograph was released of the pilot's alleged military identification card, showing his name as Maaz al-Kassasbeh, his birth date as May 29, 1988, and his rank of first lieutenant. The jihadists claimed to have shot down … [Read more...] about IS downs warplane over Syria, claims capture of Jordan pilot

An international peace conference aimed at ending Syria's civil war will be held on January 22, the first face-to-face talks between the government of President Bashar al-Assad and rebels seeking to overthrow him, the United Nations said on Monday. The United Nations is hoping for a peaceful transition in Syria, building on an agreement between world powers reached in June last year. The deal calls for the warring sides to agree to set up a transitional governing body with full executive powers, including over military and security entities. "We will go to Geneva with a mission of hope," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement. The announcement came as Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi met senior U.S. and Russian officials in Geneva in his latest effort to get negotiations on track to end a war, now in its third year, that has killed more than 100,000 people. Brahimi, with backing from world powers, has been trying to convene a peace conference since May and had … [Read more...] about Syria peace talks set for January 22 in Geneva: U.N.
