Data localisation regulations in need of further guidance
Eunjung Han - Consultant, Rouse Legal Vietnam; Digital Sector Committee vice chairwoman, European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam The timing of Decree 53’s issuance was fitting given the government had unveiled the National Cybersecurity and Safety Strategy the same month as a response plan to cyberspace challenges until 2025 with vision towards 2030. The agenda of this strategy includes tasks, among others, of completing the relevant local legal framework. The keys to economic momentum
The keys to economic momentum. Photo: Shutterstock Michele Wee, CEO of Standard Chartered Vietnam “Maintaining macroeconomic stability” We expect the global economy to slow in 2023 as central banks around the world maintain restrictive monetary policies. We forecast modest global GDP growth of 2.5 per cent in 2023, slowing from an expected 3.4 per cent in 2022. The headwinds that have faced most economies in 2022 are likely to persist in the months ahead, however, we anticipate a recovery to take hold in the second half. Our recent global research report on Vietnam indicates that GDP growth is likely to remain strong in 2023. We still have a conviction about Vietnam’s high-growth potential over the medium term, expecting the growth rate to be 7.2 per cent in 2023 and 6.7 per cent in 2024. While macro indicators moderated somewhat in Q4/2022, they remain largely robust. Retail sales posted solid growth in the second half of 2022, implying improved … [Read more...] about The keys to economic momentum
Toyota joins hands with local auto supporting industry firms
A VinFast automobile factory in Dinh Vu Industrial Park, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city. Local manufacturers have paid attention to enhancing the localisation rate by investing more in auto supporting industries. — VNA/VNS Photo Viet Nam's manufacturers have enhanced the localisation rate by investing more in supporting industries. The auto supporting industry is not apart from that process, as increased localisation has gradually helped reduce the importation of components. From 2018, import tariffs on automobiles from ASEAN countries have been reduced to zero percent for Completely Built Units (CBU), posing a major challenge for domestic manufacturers, who are already facing intense competition from neighboring countries such as Thailand and Indonesia. In particular, Viet Nam signed two new generation Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). Vietnam’s largest refinery resumes normal operation
The refinery in the central province of Thanh Hoa shut down its residue fluid catalytic cracking system due to fluid leakages in late December 2022, cutting planned production in January by nearly 200,000 cubic meters. The refinery will increase production in the second half of January and the following months to offset the output shrunken by the technical glitch. Le Quoc Vinh, Deputy General Director of Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Company which runs the refinery, pledged it will ensure sufficient supply of gasoline and oil products for the market during Tet (Lunar New Year holiday). Tet 2023 falls in late January. Nghi Son meets around 40% of Vietnam’s monthly fuel demand of 1.6-1.8 million cubic meters. Last year the oil refinery also had to reduce production due to lack of money. Specifically, the refinery operated at nearly 88% of its capacity, equivalent to processing 8.9 million tons of crude oil, and supplied to the market 7.4 million tons of various … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s largest refinery resumes normal operation
