At least three leading international aid agencies have partially resumed life-saving work in Afghanistan after assurances from the Taliban authorities that Afghan women can continue to work in the health sector. An Afghan labourer carries oil containers provided by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for distribution among the needy people, at a gymnasium in Kabul on January 17, 2023. Hundreds of NGOs have been instrumental in trying to address one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with half of Afghanistan's 38 million people hungry and three million children at risk of malnutrition. CARE, Save the Children and International Rescue Committee (IRC) suspended their operations in late December in protest against a government order banning Afghan women from aid work, the latest rollback of women's rights in the country. "We have received clear, reliable assurances from relevant authorities that our female staff will be safe and can work without … [Read more...] about Three foreign NGOs partially resume aid in Afghanistan with women workers

At least 68 killed in Nepal’s worst air crash in 30 years
Hundreds of rescue workers were scouring the hillside where the Yeti Airlines flight, carrying 72 people from the capital Kathmandu, went down. Local TV showed rescue workers scrambling around broken sections of the aircraft. Some of the ground near the crash site was scorched, with licks of flames visible. The crash is Nepal's deadliest since 1992, the Aviation Safety Network database showed, when a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A300 crashed into a hillside upon approach to Kathmandu, killing all 167 people on board. The plane made contact with the airport from Seti Gorge at 10:50 a.m. (0505 GMT), the aviation authority said in its statement. "Then it crashed." Police official Ajay K.C. said rescue workers were having difficulty reaching the site in a gorge between two hills near the tourist town's airport. "Half of the plane is on the hillside," said Arun Tamu, a local resident, who told Reuters he reached the site minutes after the plane went down. "The other half … [Read more...] about At least 68 killed in Nepal’s worst air crash in 30 years
Vietnam’s GDP growth: relieved and concerned
I'm relieved that the country has had a year of strong recovery despite the world being plagued by countless disasters: wars, epidemics, natural disasters. The global economy, which was severely damaged after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, was further impacted by a military conflict that has resulted in many consequences: an energy crisis, a food crisis, broken supply chains, soaring prices and global inflation (reaching 8.8% in 2022, up from just 4.7% in 2021). The fight against inflation took place in most countries using traditional tools such as raising interest rates and reducing the money supply through both fiscal and monetary policies. This led to high interest rates, sharply fluctuating exchange rates, and high inventories. People and businesses also felt insecure and started tightening their spending and investment. Global economic growth is therefore estimated at about 3% in 2022, down sharply from the previous year's growth rate of 6%. In this context, there are … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s GDP growth: relieved and concerned

The pride of agricultural backbone
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan Last year, Vietnam’s agricultural industry spectacularly overcame hurdles with impressive growth. The profound meaning behind those impressive numbers is the pride in contributing to ensuring the social security of nearly 10 million farmers and the country’s food security. In 2022, the whole country faces challenges globally, such as inflation and obstacles in the production and export of agricultural products in the context the prices of domestic inputs are escalating. My mother-in-law asks me to give her gifts we received at our wedding
I got to know my husband when I was working as a receptionist in a hotel. We date for a year before getting marriage. His family background is quite simple. His relatives are mainly office workers. They live quite close to each other and support each other. I feel happy about that sense of support. He is very caring and loving towards me. Our wedding was elaborately organized in my hometown. I felt both proud and happy. After the wedding, I came to live with his family in his hometown. His house is a three-floor one. Most people in the family have their own personal spaces for daily activities. They even have a house helper. After the wedding, my husband helped to land me a job as a receptionist in a media company. His family is very loving towards me. The problem happened three days after the wedding. My mother-in-law asked me to give me the list of the people from her office who attended the wedding so she will know whose weddings she should attend in the future.
