Alphabet cuts 12,000 jobs after pandemic hiring spree, refocuses on AI
Google's parent Alphabet Inc is cutting about 12,000 jobs as it faces "a different economic reality", it said in a staff memo, doubling down on artificial intelligence (AI) and axing staff who support experimental projects. The job cuts affect 6% of its workforce, and follows thousands of layoffs at tech giants including Amazon.com Inc, Microsoft Corp and Meta Platforms Inc who are downsizing after a pandemic-led hiring spree left them flabby in a weak economy. Shares in Mountain View, California-based Alphabet, which boosted its workforce by nearly a third through 2020 and 2021, rose 4% on Friday. They had fallen 30% in the past 12 months, echoing a 24% slump in the broader tech industry. Sundar Pichai, Alphabet's boss since 2019, said in the memo on Friday that he took "full responsibility" for the decisions that led to the layoffs. Pichai, whose pay was recently tied more closely to performance, said this was a moment to "sharpen our focus, reengineer our cost base and … [Read more...] about Alphabet cuts 12,000 jobs after pandemic hiring spree, refocuses on AI
From zero to hero: A downsized worker who owns a million-dollar factory
The company currently enjoys an export turnover of $4 million per year. On the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, Lap Phuc Co.'s factory of more than 10,000 square meters in Ho Chi Minh City was still busy with the final stages of an automobile mold order for export to the United States. Factory worker Vo Nhut Han stared intently at the control panel, a satisfied look on his face as the machine operated smoothly. Operating the machine together with Han was Nguyen Van Tri, the factory's general director. "Each working day, I only spend an hour on management work, and the rest of the day is spent down on the factory floor working alongside my fellow workers," said Tri, who is now in his 60s. For him, it's as if being a worker runs in his blood. Factory worker Vo Nhut Han (L) works on a machine at Lap Phuc Company in HCMC as its general director Nguyen Van Tri observes, January 2023. Malaysia accelerates recruitment of foreign workers for recovery
Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia ’s expected entry of 500,000 foreign workers this year will not affect job opportunities for locals, said Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar on January 16. As reported by the local news agency Bernama, the official said the workers from 15 source countries in Asia will be placed in sectors of no interest to local workers, including plantation, agriculture and construction. According to him, Malaysia’s dependence on foreign workers in these sectors is very high, and without sufficient supply of the group, their optimal operation will be disrupted, resulting in huge losses. He said the Human Resources Ministry and the Ministry of Home Affairs had reached an agreement to simplify and speed up the process of hiring foreign workers , which now only takes three days. In October last year that Malaysia needed a total of 500,000 foreign workers to tackle the labour shortage experienced by micro, small and medium enterprises to support … [Read more...] about Malaysia accelerates recruitment of foreign workers for recovery

Three foreign NGOs partially resume aid in Afghanistan with women workers
At least three leading international aid agencies have partially resumed life-saving work in Afghanistan after assurances from the Taliban authorities that Afghan women can continue to work in the health sector. An Afghan labourer carries oil containers provided by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for distribution among the needy people, at a gymnasium in Kabul on January 17, 2023. Hundreds of NGOs have been instrumental in trying to address one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with half of Afghanistan's 38 million people hungry and three million children at risk of malnutrition. CARE, Save the Children and International Rescue Committee (IRC) suspended their operations in late December in protest against a government order banning Afghan women from aid work, the latest rollback of women's rights in the country. "We have received clear, reliable assurances from relevant authorities that our female staff will be safe and can work without … [Read more...] about Three foreign NGOs partially resume aid in Afghanistan with women workers
Vietnam to add 150,000 jobs in first quarter
Vietnam’s economy was expected to add more than 150,000 new jobs in the2018's first quarter, continuing last year’s positive streak of job generation. (Source: vtv.vn) The total number of employed workers could reach 54.2 million people, partly driven by the long economic expansion as the GDP growth in the first three months this year was likely to reach 6.3 per cent, said the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs (ILSSA) head Dao Quang Vinh during a meeting on the labour market last week. Such new job gain, however, will be only half of what was created in the last quarter of 2017, when about 282,200 people secured a job. Graduate unemployment According to an ILSSA report on the labour market in the fourth quarter of 2017, there were 1.07 million people unemployed, of which 20 per cent, or 215,300, were university graduates. Though the unemployment rate among university graduates decreased sharply compared to the previous quarter, it remains a heavy pressure on … [Read more...] about Vietnam to add 150,000 jobs in first quarter
