Hanoi students to enjoy 8-day school break on Lunar New Year

The Hanoitimes - The school break in Hanoi will begin on January 22 (the 28th day of the last lunar month) and last until January 29 (the fifth day of the first lunar month). Hanoi students will have an eight-day school break in the upcoming Tet holiday, according to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. Accordingly, the school break in Hanoi will begin on January 22 (the 28th day of the last lunar month) and last until January 29 (the fifth day of the first lunar month). Illustrative photo The schools are asked to instruct the students to have proper behavior during the long school break and ensure social order and traffic safety. In particular, students are instructed not to engage in illegal racing, gambling or social evils. Meanwhile, government offices, state-owned companies and schools across the country will close for seven days. This is one of the two seven-day holiday options proposed by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in August. Under the second option, the holiday would start on January 24, a day before Tet, and run until January 30, the sixth day of the new lunar year. After considering the two options, the ministry considered the first more suitable as people working away from home will have two days off to travel and prepare for the most significant holiday of the year. Vietnam had a nine-day break for the last Tet festival that fell in February this year. There has been a long-lasting debate on whether Vietnam should merge the celebration of Lunar New Year holiday with the Gregorian New Year, or the Tet holiday should be shortened. Tet is the biggest and most important festival in Vietnam. Millions of migrant workers in major cities return to their homes before Lunar New Year's Eve. It is celebrated by Vietnamese and Chinese communities around the world. It is also a prolific season for the retail and travel businesses as the consumption and excursion demand is high during this time …

Volunteer doctors care for needy mountainous people

This 22nd free medical program of the AVD provided 1,256 locals with heart disease screening and checkups for other common diseases. In the program, locals were given blood tests, electrocardiogram and ultrasound practices, etc., and provided with free medicines to treat common diseases. Apart from the medical examination, the AVD also presented 170 gifts to needy people and national contributors. At the same time, the “Books for students” program of the AVD was held, giving away 250 gifts for students and handed over a large volume of textbooks and storybooks, worth VND 26.11 million, to the library of the Secondary School of Pa Thom. Furthermore, the AVD showed students how to brush their teeth and wash their hands to prevent getting infected by common diseases. Pa Thom is a mountainous commune which borders Laos along the 27km of borderline. The commune has 1,300 needy households; therefore, a lot of people have yet to pay due attention to their health conditions. The free medical examination program  of the AVD this time has helped raise locals’ awareness of health and prevention of common diseases, serving as a deed of “La lanh dum la rach” (the good leaves cover worn-out leaves), a precious tradition of the Vietnamese people. Remote classes a winner for yoga teacher

by Hoàng Vân Anh Hà My Yoga was founded by yoga teacher Lê Hà My and specialises in teaching beginners the basics of the spiritual discipline and how to avoid injuries in those less-than-limber early days. Despite now being based in Sweden, she continues to teach Vietnamese students via her archive of online videos and also writes about how to use props to make it easier to practise. A book is also in the pipeline. She first practised yoga seriously in 2016. As someone who enjoys sport and movement and had tried many different things, she found savasana -- the five minutes of rest at the end of every yoga class -- to be unique compared to other practices. Later on, she aspired to teach to the standard of Indian teachers and fortunately won a scholarship for a training course at the Om Factory HANOI - School of Yoga. And that was when she underwent a change in career. HELP FOR BEGINNERS: Hà My and one of her many props. Photo Hà My Yoga Her previous job in HCM City didn’t have a fixed schedule and was quite stressful. She quit that job to fully focus on the 200 hours of teacher training, and when a later opportunity fell through she decided to stay in Sweden and start teaching yoga. Within a few months, she was at it full-time, with up to 20 hours of classes a week. She practised providing instructions in both Vietnamese and Swedish simultaneously, and was also able to plan classes under any topic the studio asked of her. “The best part about teaching at Om Factory, which is a big studio, is how I receive constant feedback from the sales team, which originates from customers,” Hà My said. “After a year of working there, I gained so much experience that I now teach better classes and deliver better value for money to students. “My favourite thing about practising yoga is how much calmer I have become. As a career, I’m very serious about it, to the point that I want to pass down the craft and the business to my future children …
