Luong Van Chanh High school for the gifted has just commended and awarded 33 students winning prizes at the April 30th traditional Olympic contest of Southern provinces, the 20th time in 2016. Among these elite students, three won gold prizes and ranked at the first, second and third position of the entire Southern provinces with the two subjects of Physics and Chemistry. Luong Van Chanh high school for the gifted team attending the contest this year has 54 students, 12 of whom won gold medals, 11 silver and 10 bronze. Overseas Vietnamese students in Canberra (Australia) recently held a photo contest themed "Autumn Canberra in me" organized by the Executive Board of the Vietnamese Youth and Student Association. Each photo shows angles of view, colors and different feelings towards dreamy Canberra. "Canberra autumn always associates with richness, diversity of colors, plants and flowers, especially with tree sunshade, carpets of shiny yellow leaves, or red trees on roadside. All create poetic and beautiful scenery, which makes not only people in Canberra but also tourists passionate. However, romantic autumn scenery is also easy to arouse meditation, confidence for expatriates," wrote a comment sent to the organizing board. HA NOI (VNS)— The Viet Nam Bank for Social Policy will set aside VND45 trillion (US$2.16 billion) for a five-year lending programme for poor students from this year, according to its general director Duong Quyet Thang. He was speaking at a conference in Ha Noi chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan reviewing the implementation of a Government decree on financial support for disadvantaged students. Thang said that no student would be left without schooling because of money shortages under the bank's programme. However, some education experts disagreed and have warned that the amount was still not enough to cater for the need of students nation-wide. Among the beneficiaries of the programme are orphans, students whose families are living under or near the poverty line, and those who have suffered financial difficulties as a result of illness, injury or natural disaster. A group of Singaporean students have visited children with HIV/AIDS in Mai Hoa and Mai Tam centres in Ho Chi Minh City. The Singaporean friends had a wonderful time with 60 children in the two centres. They had shared meals and played games and danced together. Jonathan Ho, from the NationalHigh School, said that before going to Vietnam, they had equipped themselves with lots of information related to HIV/AIDS and preventive measures, though they did know that it was not easy to be infected with HIV. Alissa Hew, Jonathan Ho's schoolmate, said what she witnessed in Vietnam gave her the inspiration and determination to make society have a more compassionate look at HIV-positive people, especially the child victims.
