Cashew industry urged to focus on markets with FTAs
Cashew exports saw two-digit drops in the first seven months of this year. — Photo baochinhphu.vn The cashew industry should focus on markets in which Viet Nam had signed trade deals to take advantage of preferential tariffs and expand exports as inflation had pushed up the prices of raw materials and forced people to tighten spending, according to the Viet Nam Cashew Association. Cashew exports saw two-digit drops in the first seven months. Statistics of the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade showed that cashew exports were estimated at 294,000 tonnes, worth US$1.76 billion in January-July, dropping by 10.5 per cent in volume and 12.1 per cent in value against the same period last year. While the average export price increased by 1.45 per cent against the same period last year to $5,792 per tonne, the price of raw cashews rose by 15-20 per cent. Central bank reduces intervention on OMO

The SBV withdrew more than VND1 trillion through the bill channel in the first week of August. — Photo SBV The open market operations (OMO) have been more stable this month after the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) reduced its intervention in the market. According to Saigon Securities Incorporation (SSI)’s research division, the OMO had seen strong fluctuations last month when the SBV consecutively injected a large amount of Vietnamese dong totalling VND46 trillion through bill issues. In August, the SBV changed its policy, starting to withdraw cash out of the market through the OMO. It withdrew more than VND1 trillion through the bill channel in the first week of August. Tra Vinh nurtures private sector to kickstart economy
In the first half of this year, Tra Vinh province has issued registration certificates to 250 businesses. Among which, there are 165 one-member limited liability companies; 45 multi-member limited liability companies; 20 private enterprises; 20 joint stock companies; and 151 affiliated units. The overall amount of registered capital hit around $169 million, and the total number of registered personnel reached nearly 3,800 individuals. There are just under 3,000 active businesses with a total capitalisation of $2.1 billion and nearly 90,800 workers. Some 44 of those businesses are foreign-invested firms. In addition, almost 500 firms and affiliated units were registered for expanded business lines, capital, and other adjustments, increasing the total extra capital to $143 million. Saigon street breathes after metro construction site cleared
A 800-meter section of Le Loi Street from Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Zone to Ben Thanh Market is cleared of barriers on Aug. 12. The street has been blocked since mid-2014 to build Ben Thanh Station, one of the three underground hubs of the Metro Line No.1. The station, at about 32 meters underground, has four floors with six entrances and is now more than 95 percent complete. The street has been resurfaced with 10 lanes. Barriers are removed from a 250-meter section near Ben Thanh Market. Workers repair the street in front of Ben Thanh Market. The city is also working on a plan to resume the roundabout in front of the market, one of its top tourist attractions and cultural icons.
