Defense Ministry reviews task implementation in Q1

At the event, Director of the Department of Military Medicine under the General Department of Logistics Major General Nguyen Xuan Kien recalled the military’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Particularly, under the direction of the Ministry of National Defense, the Border Guard Command set up checkpoints at border gates and border paths to prevent illegal border crossings, contributing to minimizing spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the country. Units in the military provided 175 concentrated quarantine zones for 191,363 people returning from COVID-19-hit countries while taking different COVID-19 prevention measures to ensure safety for delegates at important events of the Party, State, and military and for enlisted youths. Apart from successfully producing made-in-Vietnam SARS-CoV-2 test kits, the military also researched and developed the Nano Covax vaccine against COVID-19 and started a COVID-19 vaccination program for troops working on the frontline of the fight against the pandemic. In addition to COVID-19 response, the whole military attached importance to training new enlistees, militiamen, and troops to participate in the 2021 International Army Games (2021 Army Games) . Military units also carried out programs on overcoming war legacy effectively. Together with detecting and clearing unexploded ordnance in localities across the country, they fostered international cooperation in settling consequences of war. The whole military conducted surveys and cleared 485,240 hectares of land from unexploded ordnance from 2010 to 2020 and targets to free an additional 800,000 hectares of land for socio-economic development in the next five years. Italian official: Vietnam, Italy could work on fields of shared interest

In an interview recently granted to Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Rome, Di Stefano said in recent years, Vietnam has made a stride in history, which was the result of the Vietnamese leaders’ strategic vision. The country has overcome difficulties during the Cold War and chosen the road of modernisation and multilateral integration with basic steps such as entry to the UN, ASEAN, the World Trade Organisation, and establishment of ties with regional organisations like the European Union as well as strategic partnership with many nations worldwide, including Italy, he said. According to him, Vietnam’s opening of door to receive foreign investment, including those from Italy, has brought to Vietnam necessary resources in terms of investment, labour and technology for national construction. Italy pays attention to Vietnam’s important role in the region and on international arena, he said, adding that the two nations have supported principles of a world order based on the respect of rules and the peaceful settlement of disputes, as well as shared a common wish to effectively promote multilateralism and sustainable development for all stakeholders. He reiterated Italian President Sergio Mattarella’s congratulatory message sent to new State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc that Italy will grasp cooperation opportunities from the Vietnam – Italy strategic partnership established in 2013 and the Italy – ASEAN development partnership signed in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic showed that common issues must be settled via solidarity and cooperation, which inspired Italy in its role as G20 Chair and promptly the country to fund 116 million USD for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-A) to offer equal access to vaccines worldwide, including Vietnam. Vietnam calls for int’l efforts to prevent violence, promote dialogue in Myanmar

During an Arria-formula online meeting of the UN Security Council member states which was co-chaired by the U.K., the U.S., Estonia, France, Ireland and Norway on April 9, Ambassador Quy urged supporting the role of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General on Myanmar and creating favourable conditions for the envoy's working trip to Myanmar. He stressed the top priority to ensuring life, security and safety of all, and unobstructed humanitarian aid to those in need of help, especially vulnerable groups in society. He called on parties concerned in Myamar to refrain from violent acts, conduct dialogues and reconciliation acccording to will and aspirations of the people, for the sake of peace and stability in the region. Quy affirmed that Myanmar is a member state of the ASEAN family and the bloc is ready to help the country in a constructive and peaceful manner via related mechanisms. ASEAN member states, including Vietnam, has been working with parties concerned in Myanmar to promote dialogue and seek solutions to the issue, he said. He also called on the international community to support ASEAN’s efforts and stance, and wished that discussions at the UN and relevant important issues need consultations with ASEAN member countries and others in the region. Rapporteurs at the event expressed concern over the current situation in Myanmar and warned of the risks of economic, food and health crises as well as a civil war. Many opinions called for refraining from violence and preventing tension escalation, while proposing to settle differences and disputes via dialogue and reconciliation that meet Myanmar people’s aspirations.
