Thousands of people in Hanoi, HCM City flock downtown to celebrate Christmas

The Hanoitimes - In front of the Cathedral, many people play Santa Claus to deliver presents and to take snapshots with children. On the night of December 24, tens of thousands of locals and tourists in Vietnam’s capital and metropolises flocked to churches, pedestrian zones and shopping malls to celebrate the Christmas Eve. People in Hanoi enjoyed ideal temperature of 20 degrees Celsius last night to hang out. From around 6 p.m, hundreds of Christian and non-Christian people gathered at the St. Joseph Cathedral in Hoan Kiem district to enjoy the Christmas hymns. Under the shimmering lights, children in the costumes of Santa Claus performed hymns on the stage in front of the church. The locals took selfies with the “Santa Claus” played by a foreign visitor. Germany visitors shared happy moments when celebrating the Christmas Eve in one of the biggest churches in Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, the weather was cooler at night, ideal for people to flock downtown. The lines of people and vehicles were jammed in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral. In front of the Cathedral, many people playing Santa Claus to deliver presents and to take snapshots with children. The Notre Dame Cathedral allowed a limited number of prayers to attend the ceremony due to the restoration currently underway. Cities, provinces bustling in Christmas atmosphere (photos)

Top four richest people in Vietnam in the early 20th century

The Hanoitimes - In the early 20th century, there was a saying "First Sy, second Phuong, third Xuong, and fourth Dinh" referring to the four wealthiest men in the country and Indochina at that time. Huyen Sy - Richer than the King The sculptors of Huyen Sy and his wife, also the grandparent of the last Queen in Vietnam - the Nam Phuong Queen. Documentary photo. Born in 1841 into a Catholic family, Le Nhat Sy was sent by a priest to study at a theological seminary in Penang, Malaysia. Once returning  home, he worked for the French colonial government as an interpreter then a member of the Nam Ky Colonial Council and was called Huyen (an administrative rank) Sy by his title. It was said that his property came from land investment and... luck. All the land he bought produced good harvests, making him richer and then the richest in the region. He spent a large sum on building two large churches in Saigon, namely Huyen Sy in District 1 and Chi Hoa in District 10. His son later built another, Hanh Thong Tay in Go Vap district Go Vap. All of them were located in his land, showing his vast estate spreading from district 1 to Go Vap. His granddaughter later got married to Bao Dai, the last king of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), also the last feudal regime of Vietnam, known as Queen Nam Phuong.
