City seeks investment in new construction materials as illegal sand mining continues The city plans to call for investment in new materials that could replace sand used in some construction projects in response to an increase in illegal sand mining activities, according to Tran Vinh Tuyen, vice chairman of HCM City People’s Committee. Phan Anh Minh, deputy director of the HCM City Police, said that most important national construction works in the city, including roads and public transport projects, use sand taken from illegal mining activities. A project to combat illegal sand mining in Can Gio waterways and the area between the city and surrounding provinces will begin next month and end in 2022. Under the project, the Department of Transport should also be responsible for the inspection and handling of the issue, Tuyen noted. Nguyen Toan Thang, director of the city’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said the project would cover major rivers, including Dong Nai, Sai Gon, Dong Tranh, Soai Rap and Long Tau rivers, and the Can Gio sea area. City agencies and neighbouring provinces will work together to resolve the issue, and estimate the amount of sand reserves for construction in the city, as well as propose a long-term plan for sand mining. The city will also consider other proposals and additional sanctions for illegal sand mining, sand trading and transportation of sand of unclear origin. Vietnam officials under fire for taking coaches' places in Rio Olympics Shooter secures Vietnam's first Olympic gold medal Vietnam shooter makes history with second Olympic medal Vietnam will parcipitate at the Asian Winter Games for the first time ever later this month, according to Vietnam's General Department of Sports and Physical Training. The country will send six athletes to one of the biggest sporting events in Asia to compete in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding, said Mai Ba Hung, a senior sports official in Ho Chi Minh City who will lead the Vietnamese team to the eighth Asian Winter Games in Japan. Athletes from 32 Asian countries and territories will compete for medals in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding, figure skating, short-track speed skating, speed skating, hockey, curling and the biathlon. It's worth noting that to get themselves ready for the Games, Vietnamese snowboarders and skiers have been training for the past three months on the sand dunes that surround the beach resort town of Mui Ne in the southern province of Binh Thuan. People encouraged to give blood voluntarily

After the institute called for people to donate blood on February 19, many donors have voluntarily given their blood; however, the institute receives some hundreds of blood units everyday whereas it needs 1,200 – 1,500 blood units; therefore, the institute’s reserve has gradually reduced. Head of the institute Bach Quoc Khanh said the institute needs an estimated 50,000 blood units for treatment and emergency treatment in February and March, 2021. Despite of blood donation, the institute is still short of 20,000 blood units causing tremendous impacts on supply of blood to 177 medical facilities in 28 cities and provinces in the North region. To facilitate blood donation, from March 7, Hanoi-based medical facilities where receive donated blood at 26 Luong Ngoc Quyen in Hoan Kiem District; at 132 Quan Nhan in Thanh Xuan District; at 122 Duong Lang Street in Dong Da District will be open from 8 -12 AM and 1:30 – 5 PM all days in a week including Saturday and Sunday. The institute encouraged those who are healthy enough for blood donation to give their blood to save people. The institute expected organizations to call for more employees to give blood.
