Over 800 workers face job losses following company fire in Quang Nam
More than 800 workers at a garment company in the central province of Quang Nam could lose their jobs after a fire largely damaged their workplace. The fire at Woochang Vietnam Garment Company on May 25 The fire which occurred on May 25 at Woochang Vietnam Garment Company in Trang Nhat Industrial Park, Dien Ban Town had burnt down all materials and equipment at the company's stores and factories. According to the vice-chairman of Dien Ban Town People's Committee, Nguyen Minh Hieu, the fire occurred on an area of 1.5 hectares while 760 workers and 50 managers were working. "The fire has caused big losses for the company," the official said. "Three wharehouses and many factories have totally burnt down." 37 trees in Dak Nong Province recognized as heritage trees
A over-600-year-old Lagerstroemia speciose tree has its diameter of arm spans of ten people. According to Chairman of South Central Highlands Forestry One Member Limited Company Nguyen Ngoc Binh, the recognized trees have been growing in Quang Truc Commune, Tuy Duc District, Dak Nong Province. The unit proposed VACNE to recognize a complex of 56 Lagerstroemia speciose trees and an ancient banyan tree in Quang Truc Commune under the management of the South Central Highlands Forestry Company as heritage trees. A ancient banyan tree in Quang Truc Commune is recognized as heritage tree of Vietnam. Through the assessment process, the VACNE concluded that 36 Lagerstroemia speciose trees and one ancient banyan tree in Quang Truc Commune meet the Vietnam heritage tree criteria. Extremely heavy rains have been recorded over the past four days in Vietnam's northern and north-central provinces, with total rainfall amounting to over 800 millimeters in Vinh Phuc, signaling possible unusual natural disasters this year, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting has warned. From the early morning of May 21 to May 24, Tam Dao District of Vinh Phuc Province recorded a total rainfall of 808 millimeters, the highest ever compared to the same period of May in the last several years, the center said on Wednesday. Mekong Delta faces shortage of river sand for major construction projects

In An Giang Province, a project to construct a bypass began in January, with a total investment of over VNĐ2 trillion (US$86 million). However, only 4 per cent of the targeted progress has been reached, due to a lack of river sand. Phan Duy Lai, deputy general director of the Mỹ Thuận Project Management Board, said currently, only 5,000cu.m of river sand is transported to the construction site daily. However, 8,000-10,000cu.m of river sand is needed per day to ensure the planned progress, he said.
