Government leader wants new measures to stop Covid-19 outbreak

The Hanoitimes - Although agencies and localities have made many efforts, there are still existing problems that require more drastic actions to control the pandemic. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc wanted to listen from agencies and localities new measures to stop the outbreak of Covid-19 in Vietnam, especially when a number of infected cases found in Hanoi in recent days, including a Japanese man who was confirmed posthumously to be positive for the virus in his third test. The Government leader and participants discussed about problems making public concerns, including vaccines – an urgent issue, social distancing in localities following the Government’s Instruction 16, and the cancellation of organizing festivals during Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday. “Localities must to take drastic actions in implementing prevention measures and against Covid-19,” Mr. Phuc said. Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said in the past 16 days, 12 of total 13 cities and provinces were seen decrease in the number of newly-infected cases, excepting for the northern province of Hai Duong, where is currently the Vietnam’s Covid-19 hotspot. Six cities and provinces have not reported new cases for several days including the northern city of Hai Phong, the northern mountain provinces of Hoa Binh, Dien Bien and Ha Giang, the southern province of Binh Duong and the northern province of Hung Yen. “The outbreaks in these provinces and cities …

Hanoi schools to remain closed through February amid coronavirus fears

Online classes could be an option for the capital's over two million students from kindergarten to high school levels, Chu Ngoc Anh, chairman of the city People's Committee, said at a Monday meeting. He also requested the city's Department of Education and Training to let universities and colleges follow suit. Following the decision, Hanoi has become one of 13 localities to let students stay home after the Tet break amid rising coronavirus cases, others being An Giang, Ben Tre, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Binh Thuan, Can Tho, Dien Bien, Ha Nam, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, HCMC and Thanh Hoa. Schools had been scheduled to resume on Feb. 17. Last year, Covid-19 also forced schools across the country to close for three months after Tet . On Monday, the capital recorded two new coronavirus-positive cases associated with a deceased Japanese man in the Somerset West Point hotel in Tay Ho District, who was found dead before being confirmed a Covid-19 patient Monday morning. The two people are a 24-year-old woman in Ba Dinh District and a 43-year-old Japanese man in the same Tay Ho hotel, both colleagues of the deceased man at trading firm Mitsui Vietnam. The two have been in close contact with the deceased man at a meeting on Feb. 2, according to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC). Deceased Japanese expert infected with new virus variant: Health Minister A Japanese expert who died in Hanoi on February 13 has been infected with a new variant strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, said Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long. Long announced the results of the expert’s genome sequencing at a meeting of permanent Cabinet members in Hanoi on February 24. He did not reveal specifically but said this was the first time the new strain has been detected in Vietnam. The strain, he said, has circulated mainly in the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), and India. According to the minister, Japan, the deceased expert’s home country, has yet to record this strain. To scientists, the strain it not highly transmissible, but the extent of its aggravation is not clear, said Long. Epidemiologists stated that the new strain is not linked to the fresh coronavirus hotspot in Hai Duong province where a variant strain originating from the United States was recorded. The Japanese expert entered Vietnam on January 17 through Tan Son Nhat International Airport. He was placed in quarantine in Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Binh District from January 17-31 upon his arrival. He left the quarantine facility and flew to Hanoi on February 1 after testing negative twice, on January 17 and 31. The man stayed at Somerset West Point Hanoi hotel in Quang An ward, Tay Ho district, and travelled back and forth between the hotel and his company Mitsui Vietnam. He was found dead in his hotel room on February 13. Subsequent tests showed he had carried the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
