BA.5 Omicron sub-variant detected in Vietnam
Vietnam will keep a close eye on the emergence of new strains. Vietnam has detected imported BA.5 Omicron sub-variant after conducting gene sequencing of newly confirmed patients' samples, according to Dr. Phan Trong Lan, director of the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health (MoH). Lan underscored that initial research showed the Omicron sub-lineages BA.4 and BA.5 spread faster than the old sub-variants (BA.1 and BA.2). There has been no specific evidence of the new sub-variants’ virulence, but some studies indicated that there is an aggravation in the African region. However, the director confirmed that Omicron sub-variant BA.2 still remains the dominant one in the country. “The emergence of new strains is inevitable as a result of border reopening and the new normal situation, in which precautionary protocols are relaxed,” Lan said. He added that the BA.5 sub-variant was first detected in South Africa in January. Since then, it has … [Read more...] about BA.5 Omicron sub-variant detected in Vietnam
Vietnam c.bank reportedly sells over US$10 billion from FX reserves
The move is expected to help accommodate the momentum of the exchange rate and the pressure on foreign exchange reserves. The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has reportedly sold over US$10 billion from its foreign exchange reserves amid growing pressure on the exchange rate, according to the Viet Dragon Securities Company (VDSC). The SBV expects to continue selling foreign currencies in case of market high demand. In addition, the VST also bought $75 million from commercial banks last week, equivalent to VND1.74 trillion injected into the banking system. In line with such a move, the SBV on June 21 started conducting outright bill sales with a small amount of VND200 billion ($8.6 million). Vietnam steady but external risks weigh
In any case, public debt will not hit the limit of 65 per cent of GDP, said the Ministry of Finance Vietnam’s real GDP grew 5.03 per cent on-year in the first quarter of 2022, extending the 5.22 per cent pace in the last quarter of 2021 as the services sector rebounded after more parts of its economy were reopened with the relaxation of mobility and distance restrictions. The manufacturing sector continued to take the lead, and most significantly, the overall services sector expanded 4.58 per cent on-year, from 1.22 per cent in the previous quarter and 3.62 per cent in the first quarter of last year. It was clear that service activities were able to benefit from the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions imposed during the second half of last year. Recent data suggests that Vietnam’s underlying growth momentum remained intact in the second quarter of this year. The manufacturing sector continued to power on, registering a 9.24 per cent on-year gain in the first five months, from … [Read more...] about Vietnam steady but external risks weigh
Mass biodiversity loss would slash global credit ratings, report warns
LONDON -- Major global biodiversity loss could cause enough economic damage by the end of the decade to severely cut more than half of the world's sovereign credit ratings - including China's, the first major study on the issue has warned. The research published on Thursday by a group of British universities looked a range of scenarios, including one where a partial collapse of key ecosystems savaged nature-dependent industries such as farming and fishing that some economies rely on. It estimated that the detrimental impact would result in 58% of the 26 countries studied facing at least a one notch downgrade of their sovereign credit rating. As ratings affect how much governments have to pay to borrow on the global capital markets, the downgrades would result in between $28 to $53 billion of additional interest costs annually. "The ratings impact under the partial ecosystem services collapse scenario is in many cases significant and substantial," the report said, adding that … [Read more...] about Mass biodiversity loss would slash global credit ratings, report warns
Bangladesh floods leave 3.5 million children needing clean water: UNICEF
"That's a staggering number of children and an increase over the last couple of days. Huge areas are fully underwater and are disconnected from safe drinking water and food supplies. Children need help right now," Sheldon Yett said. Government and aid agencies have rushed to provide relief including water and other supplies after flash flooding across a quarter of the South Asian nation. The floods have also disrupted health facilities, shut schools and disrupted malnutrition treatment for hundreds of children, Yett told a briefing in Geneva. Cases of diarrhoea have risen to 2,700 as of the middle of this week, he added. Authorities in Bangladesh and neighbouring India have warned of a risk of a disease epidemic. In total, more than 4.5 million people have been stranded and dozens killed in Bangladesh, many in the worst flooding in the Sylhet region in the northeast for more than 100 years. In the eastern Indian state of Assam, Indian air force helicopters have been deployed … [Read more...] about Bangladesh floods leave 3.5 million children needing clean water: UNICEF

Inflation not a domestic problem in Vietnam
Inflation in Vietnam currently does not warranty an increase in interest rates or tightening of currency. At present, Vietnam is in a more favorable position than many other countries in the world. No undue pressure In a conversation with Saigon Investment, Dr. Ho Quoc Tuan from the University of Bristol, commented that when talking about global inflation, the first factor that comes up is the increase in the price of energy and raw materials across the world which have been greatly affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. Among the factors that are affecting the most are energy prices of crude oil and gas. Analysts in this field have said that even with the US President visiting Saudi Arabia, the ability to deal with energy supply is still very difficult. Currently, the US Congress is trying to come up with policies to encourage domestic production of shale oil, but they are also not too optimistic. Dr. Ho Quoc Tuan said that this means that the supply cannot be resolved this year … [Read more...] about Inflation not a domestic problem in Vietnam
