The Han River, spanning 7.7 kilometers, starts from Quang Nam Province and flows towards Da Nang and the sea. Da Nang authorities have constructed numerous bridges to connect the two sides of the river since 2000. The river is also a popular tourist destination, with boats available for tourists to view the city at night. However, there are eyesores on the banks of the river. An abandoned cruise project begun in 2017 was never completed and the debris has yet to be cleaned up. As time went on, the infrastructure fell into a state of decline, and people began to litter the place. A sewer can be seen at an intersection between Bach Dang and Nhu Nguyet streets in Hai Chau District, next to a parking lot for tourist buses and cars. Several sections of Nhu Nguyet Street are full of litter, either with domestic waste or leftover construction materials. Empty land plots have to put up signs … [Read more...] about Iconic Da Nang river blanketed with trash

Powering smarter and greener industries
The session on "Powering smarter and greener in industries" at the VIR's digital transformation conference Denis Brunetti, president of Ericsson in Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos 5G is very much part of the collaboration between industry, academia, and government. And, of course, Ericsson has engaged RMIT University in Vietnam this year and last year in education of 5G, IT, machine learning, and AI, among others. Each country is building its own infrastructure at its own pace. Currently, there are about 55-60 countries that have already deployed 5G technology. In Vietnam, VNPT, MobiFone, and Viettel have started early, since 2020 with 5G trials. Just as data is the new oil that fuels the digital economy, the frequency spectrum is the oxygen that mobile broadband networks breath and use to grow and expand. The Vietnamese government and carriers are also deploying at a pretty good rate today, and we are also supporting carriers as much as possible to … [Read more...] about Powering smarter and greener industries
Italy’s ‘Fourth Mafia’, little-known but extremely violent
It took a loaded pistol pointed at Lazzaro D'Auria's head for the Italian landowner to finally say yes to the country's newest and most violent mafia. The Puglia farmer had resisted their extortion attempts in the past –- the threats, the fires, the damage to his crops and property. But surprised by the early morning visit of a dozen men, including a boss with a gun, he agreed to their demand for 150,000 euros a year. Instead of paying up the next day, D'Auria went to the police, making him one of the few people to ever denounce Foggia's little-known mafia, Italy's long-ignored and today its most violent organised crime syndicate. "If more citizens pressed charges, the local mafia could be weakened," D'Auria, who has lived under police protection since 2017, told AFP. "Citizens, speak out!" implored the 57-year-old, who sees recent crackdowns by authorities as a sign the mafia can be weakened if locals overcome their fears. Its bloody clan wars were once dismissed as … [Read more...] about Italy’s ‘Fourth Mafia’, little-known but extremely violent

Traces of missing Thai radioactive matter located in foundry
Thai officials searching for a radioactive cylinder missing from a power station said Monday that they had found traces of the dangerous material in a nearby steel foundry. The 25-kilo (55-pound) steel tube containing highly radioactive caesium-137 was reported missing from the coal-fired power plant in Prachinburi province, east of Bangkok, earlier this month. Officials said traces of caesium had been found at a foundry around 10 kilometres (six miles) away, though they were not sure whether the cylinder was intact. "We are not sure if the cylinder has already melted, but we found caesium at this steel melting plant," said Prachinburi governor Ronnarong Nakornjinda. He said that if it had been melted, the radioactive material would have been contained within a "closed" area, and that there was no sign of contamination nearby. A search was launched after staff at the power station reported the loss of the steel tube, roughly 30 centimetres (12 inches) long and 13 centimetres … [Read more...] about Traces of missing Thai radioactive matter located in foundry
