Shorter working week on way

· October 12, 2019 ·

Opinions are unsurprisingly mixed about proposed amendments to the Labor Law that would see the average working week cut by a few hours. A recent proposal from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL) on reducing employees’ working hours has, needless to say, attracted a lot of attention from both workers and businesses. Though opposing views have been expressed, the proposal is still regarded as the position of the majority of workers, especially manual workers in the manufacturing and service sectors. Industrious nation According to the proposal for the draft of the amended Labor Law 2019, VGCL seeks to reduce working hours for manual workers from 48 to 44 hours a week and to 40 hours by 2030. The move would bring equality between manual workers and others who have worked 40 hours a week since 1999.  Vietnam has among the highest average weekly working hours in the world, at 48 hours, according to VGCL. It remains, however, among those with the lowest GDP per … [Read more...] about Shorter working week on way

Visa exemptions passport to tourism bonanza: expert

· December 10, 2019 ·

Kenneth Atkinson, vice president of Tourism Advisory Board (TAB), told the Vietnam Travel and Tourism Summit held in Hanoi Monday the country has fared poorly compared to its neighbors in providing visa exemptions to attract more visitors.  "Many countries have implemented the visa waiver policy due to its huge benefits. If Vietnam does waive visas for Europe tourists who travel longer and spend more, tourism growth could reach 20 percent," said Atkinson, also founder and senior board adviser of consulting firm Grant Thorton Vietnam. The number of foreigners visiting Vietnam in the first 11 months of this year is estimated at 16.3 million, an all-time high which was up 15.3 percent year-on-year, official data shows. Atkinson expressed concern that Vietnam's visa exemption policy for visitors from countries such as Russia, South Korea, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden will officially expire on December 31, with the government yet to respond to the … [Read more...] about Visa exemptions passport to tourism bonanza: expert

Malaysia a formidable foe, warns Vietnam coach ahead of World Cup qualifier

· October 10, 2019 ·

At a press conference in Hanoi Wednesday, he said: "[Since] the 2018 AFF Cup Malaysia have become different. They have some more foreign players and employ safer, more stable tactics, especially in midfield." "I take special notice of No. 20 Syafid Ahmad. He can penetrate the penalty area and cover a wide area. Malaysia's two wings are also strong, especially with the right winger Mohamadou Sumareh. Their sprints down the left flank often produce a high scoring rate." Asked about Vietnamese forward Nguyen Cong Phuong and left-back Doan Van Hau, both of whom just returned home after playing in Europe, Park said they are both ready for the upcoming match. "However I am a bit worried about Phuong’s performance. While he was in Belgium, he did not play often, so I’m a bit on the fence about his ball sense." The Vietnamese players were scheduled to have their last practice session on Wednesday afternoon before Park finalizes the line-up. "We absolutely intend to win Thursday … [Read more...] about Malaysia a formidable foe, warns Vietnam coach ahead of World Cup qualifier
