Indonesian martial art pencak silat gets UNESCO heritage status
Anwar bin Sholeh had something to cheer when he showed up at a Jakarta training centre to practice pencak silat -- the Indonesian martial art was added to UNESCO's prestigious heritage list. "It's an honour that pencak silat has been recognised internationally," the 38-year-old, who has been practising the art since elementary school, told AFP. "This will motivate us to preserve our traditions and culture," he added. On April 4 the 43-year-old donor was admitted to Dong Nai General Hospital in critical condition following a traffic accident in Long Thanh district. The man had suffered a traumatic brain injury, and doctors said death was imminent. Since he had expressed a desire to donate his organs and his family wanted to make his wish come true, doctors called the organ transplant coordination unit at Cho Ray, said Ngo Duc Tuan, Director of Dong Nai General Hospital. The statistics were published at the 5th National Scientific Conference on Stem Cells, which opened in Hanoi on April 23 with the participation of around 300 health experts. Since the 1950s, the study and application of stem cells in medicine has been considered a breakthrough, creating new development opportunities for the medical sector.
