Long-standing supermarket brand Big C renamed in Vietnam

Twelve outlets of Big C, the long-standing supermarket brand run by Thailand’s Central Group, has had its brand identity changed after 22 years in Vietnam. According to the announcement of Central Retail, which is Central Group’s retail subsidiary, seven Big C supermarkets inside apartment buildings were renamed Tops Market, while five Big C hypermarkets were changed to GO! Among that, three Big C supermarkets inside apartment complexes in Ho Chi Minh City, including Big C An Phu, Big C Thao Dien, and Big C Au Co, were the first to have been relabeled. Four Big C supermarkets of the same type in Hanoi, including Big C The Garden, Big C Ha Dong, Big C Nguyen Xien, and Big C Le Trong Tan are set to follow suit by the third quarter of this year. Meanwhile, all five Big C hypermarkets have been rebranded since the end of December last year. The brand identity change took place nearly five years behind the Thai retail giant’s schedule as the firm had originally planned to do so immediately after its acquisition of Big C Vietnam from France’s Groupe Casino in 2016. However, the transition was not easy as Big C was a familiar brand name that had given Vietnamese consumers a long-lasting and trustworthy impression. It also marked the disappearance of the Big C brand after 22 years of existence in Vietnam. Big C started its presence in Vietnam in 1998 as a subsidiary of Groupe Casino. In addition to relabeling existing Big C hypermarkets to GO!, Central Retail already built new GO! hypermarkets in My Tho City in Tien Giang Province, Ben Tre City in the namesake province, Tra Vinh City in the namesake province, Buon Ma Thuot City in Dak Lak Province, and Quang Ngai City in the eponymous province last year. Big C was founded by Central Group in 1993. It has operations in four countries, namely Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. As of 2019, Big C had operated 153 hypermarkets, 63 supermarkets, and 1,018 Mini Big C stores, according to Bangkok Post . …

Germany seeks to extend AstraZeneca jabs to over 65s soon

Germany’s vaccine regulator should recommend within days that the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine can be given to people older than 65 as evidence mounts of its efficacy, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Wednesday. Data from Britain show that the jab works “very well” in older people, Spahn told German television, adding that he had asked the regulator to adjust its recommendation accordingly so the vaccine can be rolled out quickly to those over 65. “If we could vaccinate the over-65-year-olds with AstraZeneca, that would really speed things up and protect the most vulnerable more quickly,” he said. The German policy that the AstraZeneca vaccine be given only to people aged 18 to 64 has led to a low take-up of available doses, slowing vaccination efforts, prompting the government last week to urge the public to accept the jabs. On Tuesday, the French health minister said the country will allow people under 75 with existing health problems to get the AstraZeneca vaccine, departing from an earlier stance that the vaccine should be for the under-65s only. The reassessment is likely to help speed up France’s vaccination campaign which many have criticized as too slow. Britain has been rolling out the AstraZeneca vaccine since January, beginning with the elderly and health workers, after approving its use for all adults. Spahn is also in favour of adopting the British practice of extending the time between the first and second jabs so that more people can be protected quickly, both for the AstraZeneca vaccine and that made by Pfizer/BioNTech. …

Big C retail brand in Vietnam renamed into GO! and Tops Market

The Hanoitimes - The move ended a retail brand name that has been familiar with local customers for the past 22 years. Central Group Vietnam, the owner of the retail chain Big C Vietnam, has announced its decision to rename the brand into GO! and Tops Market, officially ending a name that has been familiar with local customers for the past 22 years. Big C supermarkets are now renamed into Tops Market. The change was actually delayed by nearly five years against Central Group’s original plan. In 2016, the Thai-based group had completed the acquisition of Big C Vietnam from France’s Casino Group. Central Group is entitled to use the Big C brand in 10 years, but it wanted to change the name right after completing the deal. However, the transition was not easy due to the prestige of Big C brand among local customers. Starting from March 1, 2021, three Big C supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, including Big C An Phu, Big C Thao Dien and Big C Au Co have changed their names to Tops Market. In Hanoi, the four Big C super markets, including the Garden, Ha Dong, Nguyen Xien and Le Trong Tan, are scheduled to complete the change into Tops Market in this third quarter. …
