Vietnamese farmers downbeat over tumbling Thai jackfruit prices
The farm gate prices for Thai jackfruit in Vietnam's Mekong Delta have dropped by VND2,000-3,000 (8-12 U.S. cents) per kilogram, but farmers are still struggling to find buyers, forcing many to leave jackfruits piling up in their gardens or use the crop as animal feed. Hoang Van Linh, a resident of Cai Lay District of Tien Giang Province, said his garden is full of ripe jackfruits, but traders simply are not interested. Linh has resorted to giving the harvest to family and friends. He switched from growing durians to jackfruits in 2016 when saltwater intrusion began affecting his growing operation. Now, with durians selling for VND40,000-50,000 ($1.7-2) per kilogram, he regrets the decision. “The Thai jackfruit trees on my farm are bursting with ripe fruits, but no one wants them,” complained Nguyen Van Tu, another farmer in Cai Lay District. Three years ago, when jackfruit prices were at VND40,000 per kilogram, Tu’s family was able to earn about VND5 million ($215) per … [Read more...] about Vietnamese farmers downbeat over tumbling Thai jackfruit prices

Vietnamese turn frugal as prices soar
The Hanoi housewife of four years knows however they will not be as fresh as earlier in the day. "Since the prices of everything have gone up, I have to change my shopping habits and doing so helps me able to buy produce at lower prices," the 28-year-old says. She and her husband, Tinh, had their first son more than a year ago before having a pair of twins. Tinh is the sole breadwinner and he had to stay at home for three months when Covid-19 broke out last year. "We even had to sell our gold wedding rings to stay afloat," she says. After Covid subsided he reopened his store distributing beverages, but barely makes a profit since gasoline prices have been soaring since April. Besides, many of his customers have greatly reduced their purchases. Crackdown on sidewalk encroachment along West Lake’s banks a wasted effort in Hanoi
Hanoi authorities’ campaigns to solve sidewalk encroachment caused by street hawkers on the banks of the West Lake have proved to be water off a duck’s back as the issue recurs after every crackdown. The West Lake, which is the capital’s biggest freshwater reservoir located in Tay Ho District, has long been a favorite spot for young people to hang out, leading to the emergence of street stalls along its banks. Street hawkers rake in money from visitors to the lake by displaying their wares on the banks to sell street food and beverages even though that means the sidewalk there is partly or completely blocked. The encroachment has prompted local authorities to roll out multiple crackdowns, which have turned out to be wasted labor as the street stalls crept back in a few days. VN-Index strengthens by more than 15 points, backed by banking stocks
The benchmark started the morning trading session not so smoothly when the demand still hesitated, while the holders were ready to push sell orders when they saw that stocks reached their expected price levels. The cautiousness of both sides made the VN-Index go down slightly in the ATO session. The market continuously shook in the morning trading session when both the buyers and sellers failed to show their superior on the electric board. The market only improved in the afternoon trading session when buy orders above the reference price unexpectedly poured into the group of banking stocks. The green color from the most important stock group in the market was the driving force, helping change the color of the remaining large-cap stocks in the VN30 basket. At the end of the trading session, the VN-Index gained by 15.28 points, or 1.27 percent, to 1,218.1 points. Of the index, 326 stocks emerged, 53 remained unchanged, and 136 sank. Notably, the list of stocks that climbed today … [Read more...] about VN-Index strengthens by more than 15 points, backed by banking stocks
Parents faced with financial burden on textbook purchasing for new school year
Mô Choosing textbooks for children in Hai An Bookstore in District 1 of HCMCảnh This situation is common in many schools around HCMC. Although teachers have said that the school does not force its students to buy workbooks, many parents admitted they do not know which items are compulsory, so it is safer to buy all in case their children need them. Some bookstores in HCMC separate the pack for formal textbooks from that for workbooks, and they even offer individual books for sale. But others compile these books into one large pack and force people to buy all, even with a discount of 5 percent. Parents, who are usually uncertain of which books are necessary, decide to buy all of them for fear that when they truly need the books, they cannot find these books for sale anymore. Receiving the report on several schools selling textbooks with workbooks and learning tools, Head of Binh Tan District Education and Training Division Ngo Van Tuyen responded that the registration form … [Read more...] about Parents faced with financial burden on textbook purchasing for new school year
