People net fish onto a beach in Quang Xuong district of Thanh Hoa province (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - Under Vietnam’s fisheries development strategy to 2030 and vision to 2045, the fisheries sector is applying itself to become an important sector in the country, strongly integrate into the world, develop sustainably and responsibly, and proactively adapt to climate change . Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that after continually posting rapid growth, the fisheries sector now has considerable production scale and value along with many products earning annual export turnover in excess of 1 billion USD. Its product structure has changed strongly towards higher proportions of aquaculture and products with high added value, he noted, adding that aquatic products have been exported to about 160 countries and territories, in particular the EU, Japan, the US, the Republic of Korea, and Russia. The presence of Vietnamese fishing boats and fishermen on the country’s seas has also greatly helped safeguard maritime sovereignty and security. The fisheries sector now provides jobs for about 3.9 million people, thus contributing to agricultural restructuring, according to Tien. However, he acknowledged, there remain many problems facing the sector, which has yet to fully tap into its potential and advantages. It is looking to earn 14-16 billion USD from exports and establish itself as a key national sector with sustainable development and proactive adaptation to climate change by 2030. Vietnam also targets becoming one of the three leading fisheries producers and exporters in the world by 2045. Tran Dinh Luan, General Director of the Directorate of Fisheries, recommended localities re-organise production, exercise sound control over inputs, issue timely warnings on disease in farmed species, and boost technology transfer, which are both short and long-term tasks. He also called on relevant agencies to …

Vietnamese man transforms love for Japanese food into acclaimed career

Originally from Son Tay, a small rural town outside Hanoi, Nguyen Ba Phuoc spent much of his childhood cooking with his family, but never imagined that he would one day become one of Vietnam’s top chefs of Japanese cuisine. In 2016, Phuoc was awarded a full scholarship by Hokuto Bunka Academy in Hokkaido, Japan and became a student of its cooking faculty the same year. One year later, he was honored as one of the ten most excellent residents living in the city of Muroran for his achievements in studying Japan's traditional cuisine and promoting Vietnamese cuisine there as well. In 2020, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Vu Hong Nam presented a certificate of merit to Phuoc for his outstanding contribution to the Vietnamese community in Hokkaido. Phuoc has also become a coordinator for the Traditional Japanese Culinary Research Association. A 'wild child' Phuoc was never an all-star student. Even now, long after graduation many of his teachers still remember him as a "wild child who couldn’t sit still long enough to take in a lesson." In fact, his scores were so low that he was not able to attend a public high school and was instead placed in a complementary education school – an outcome that shamed his parents. During his formative years, Phuoc’s dream was to turn his reputation as a class clown into a full-time profession by following in the footsteps of his idols – locally famous comedians Xuan Bac and Tu Long. “I always try my best to make people around me laugh and feel comfortable,” Phuoc said. Phuoc’s dream of making it big as a comedian was shattered when he failed the entrance exam to the Hanoi Academy of Theater and Cinema and had to figure out what his next steps in life would be. Around that time, his father offered him a piece of advice that would forever change his life. “You’d better learn to cook,” his father suggested. For years Phuoc had cooked for his family. Though he had always enjoyed feeding his mother and father, he …

Japanese pin hopes on Vietnam’s market New Japanese joint ventures in Vietnam are providing the evidence that Vietnam is becoming a haven for trusting investments as the globe attempts to fight out of the pandemic recessions. Meiji’s infant formula business in Vietnam mainly imports products from Japan and sales are growing steadily. The number of births per year in Vietnam is 1.5 million or approximately 1.7 times higher than that of Japan, and the market is expected to continue to expand in the future. By establishing a new company in Vietnam, Meiji aims to conduct more timely and effective sales activities and conduct business operations rooted in the region. Meanwhile, Sojitz Corporation and Vietnam Livestock Corporation JSC (VILICO), a company of the country’s leading dairy group Vinamilk, have reached an agreement to establish a new joint venture for the purpose of importing, processing, and selling beef products in Vietnam. Vietnam’s annual beef consumption is currently close to 500,000 tonnes, and is expected to increase as income levels rise and population growth continues. The joint venture, named Japan Vietnam Livestock Co., Ltd., will be capitalised at $2 million. Equity ownership will be split 49 per cent to Sojitz and 51 per cent to VILICO, while the joint venture is considering importing beef from such markets as Japan, North America, and Australia.
