Man Utd reach FA Cup quarter-finals, Burnley crash out

Man Utd reach FA Cup quarter-finals, Burnley crash out (photo: youtube/FPT Bóng Đá) Solskjaer's side were well below their best in a scrappy fifth round tie at freezing, snow-dusted Old Trafford. But a fine finish from Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay ensured United advanced to the last eight for a seventh successive season. United last won the FA Cup in 2016 and McTominay's third goal in three games kept them in the hunt to lift the trophy for the 13th time. After the frustration of the late Everton equaliser that dented their Premier League title challenge on Saturday, this was an essential result to lift the mood at United. It was hardly an eye-catching performance however, with United labouring against defensive West Ham until McTominay and Bruno Fernandes were introduced as second half substitutes. "When it's only 1-0 and we are wasteful, anything can happen to us. We knew that from the last game," Solskjaer told BBC Sport. "I think we got about 15 to 17 shots in the end but we need to be more clinical. We should have finished the game off earlier. "We needed to have a good result and a good feeling after today because we were low after Everton game. "We are in the hat and that's what we wanted. We want to challenge and we want to go to the final. That's what we're here at Man United for." Amad Diallo was named on the United bench for the first time since the 18-year-old's January move from Atalanta as Solskjaer made six changes. Lukasz Fabianski prevented United from taking the lead in the 27th minute when he brilliantly pushed Victor Lindelof's header onto the post. There was a nasty clash of heads between West Ham's Issa Diop and United's Anthony Martial towards the end of the first half. Both continued after treatment but Diop did not return in the second half due to concussion. "To clarify, Issa Diop was replaced as a concussion substitute, meaning we can now make a total of six changes, as can Manchester United, if we see …

Australia to introduce landmark Google, Facebook legislation to parliament next week

CANBERRA -- Australia will introduce landmark legislation to force Alphabet’s Google and Facebook to pay publishers and broadcasters for content next week, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said on Friday. Australia is on course to become the first country to require Facebook and Google to pay for news content, legislation that is being closely watched around the world. “The bill will now be considered by the parliament from the week commencing 15 February 2021,” Frydenberg said in an emailed statement. With bipartisan support, the legislation - which Google says is “unworkable” and will force it to pull out of the country altogether - could come into law this month. The acceleration of the bill came as a senate committee examining the proposals recommended no amendments. Representatives for Google and Facebook did not immediately comment when contacted by Reuters . The U.S. search and social media giants have pressed Australia to soften the legislation, with senior executives from both companies holding talks with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Frydenberg. Google last week launched a platform in Australia offering news it has paid for, striking its own content deals with publishers in a drive to show the proposed legislation is unnecessary. Last month Reuters said it had signed a deal with Google to be the first global news provider to Google News Showcase. Reuters is owned by news and information provider Thomson Reuters Corp. Google and a French publishers’ lobby also agreed in January to a copyright framework for the tech firm to pay news publishers for content online, a first for Europe. …

Man City survive huge FA Cup scare, Arsenal crash out

Man City survive huge FA Cup scare, Arsenal crash out (photo: youtube/ FPT Bong Da) Six-time winners City were minutes away from exiting at the fourth-round stage before goals from Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres broke the hearts of the brave League Two side. City boss Pep Guardiola made 10 changes for the trip to the southwest of England but his side was still packed with internationals. The home team -- 72 places below City in the football pyramid -- produced a stirring defensive display but also sporadically threatened at the other end of the pitch. Jesus hit the post shortly after the restart as City upped the tempo following a goalless first half but it was the home team who broke the deadlock. The visitors failed to deal with the outstanding Ben Tozer's long throw and Alfie May fired in from close range just before the hour mark. Guardiola threw on Ilkay Gundogan and Joao Cancelo in a desperate bid to find a way back into the game and was rewarded in the 81st minute when Foden volleyed in Cancelo's cross. Three minutes later Jesus made amends for his earlier miss and Torres made it 3-1 with the final kick of the game, turning in Gundogan's low cross. "We came here with humility and had the quality to make the difference," said Guardiola. "They used their quality in the box, they are taller and better than us there and we showed clips on how to solve it. It is difficult to control that." The Catalan had warm words for Foden, who is the club's top-scorer in all competitions this season. "Phil Foden is in a great moment and with great confidence," he added. "He is clinical in front of goal." Cheltenham boss Michael Duff said he was "super proud" of his players, bemoaning the fact the match had to be played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic. "It's a shame because (with fans) the place would've been bouncing," he said. "Would that have seen us through in the last 10 minutes? I'm not so sure -- but the …
