Thousands of apartments and land lots for the resettlement of residents in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have been left deserted for years, causing huge waste. While many laborers are in dire need of accommodations, solutions to these abandoned resettlement apartments and the resettlement in the future to prevent similar cases are needed. Abandonment and untidiness According to the Hanoi Department of Construction, the capital city is now home to nearly 18,000 resettlement apartments. Most of them have been sold and allocated for projects. Only over 400 units remain unused. However, in reality, thousands of these apartments are presently empty. Some projects with hundreds of apartments each are complete but their wastewater treatment and fire prevention and control systems have yet to be approved. Most of these projects are now degrading and facing a shortage of facilities, such as playgrounds for children, sport facilities, and parks. Ho Chi Minh City mulls ‘tourism tax’ for overnight visitors
The Ho Chi Minh City tourism department is seeking feedback on a proposal to impose a small ‘tourism tax’ on visitors for each night spent in the city. Money raised from the proposed VND23,000 tax, equivalent to roughly one U.S. dollar, would be spent on improving the local tourism infrastructure, the department said in its proposition to the municipal administration. Inspiration for the tax came from revisions to the law on tourism, effective from January 2018, which will allow localities to create a fund for tourism development with revenues generated from tourists. The proposal has so far received positive feedback from local travel companies, who say the fee will be insignificant to tourists but will have huge upsides for Ho Chi Minh City’s tourism infrastructure and promotional opportunities. Tran The Dung, deputy director of The He Tre Travel, said it is a good idea to have a new source of capital, funded by tourists who enjoy services offered by the city. “The lack of … [Read more...] about Ho Chi Minh City mulls ‘tourism tax’ for overnight visitors

A doctor at the emergency department of a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City was recently attacked by a family member of a patient, just about 10 days after another medical practitioner at the same facility was assaulted. Police in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City confirmed on Saturday they were working with 29-year-old V.H.H. to verify his alleged attack on a doctor at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital. H. said he took his mother, who suffered severe respiratory failure, to the infirmary’s emergency department at around 6:00 am on the same day. On breathing support, H.’s mother needed to go to the toilet. However, doctors stated that it would be dangerous to let the patient go to the toilet in such a condition. Vandalizing paint on Ho Chi Minh City new bridge resists 14 solvents
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation has used 14 types of solvent to remove vandalizing paint on the newly-opened Thu Thiem 2 Bridge but that effort has proved fruitless, its deputy director Bui Hoa An said at a meeting on Thursday. The bridge, officially opened to traffic on April 28, has been smeared with paint and graffiti. The vandalism is taking place at not only the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge but also many other structures across the city, including metro line No. 1 . In order to restore the new bridge to its original state, the municipal transport department used 14 types of solvent to remove the paint and graffiti. But the substances failed to dissolve them. The department is thus considering covering the bridge with a new coat of paint, according to An. The price of the paint the department intends to buy, however, is as expensive as VND300,000 (US$13) per square meter. Ho Chi Minh City Wings deal first loss to Thang Long Warriors in overtime
The Thang Long Warriors, last year’s Vietnam Professional Basketball League (VBA) runners-up, suffered their first defeat this season against the Ho Chi Minh City Wings in a neck and neck performance that stretched into overtime. The trend in this year’s VBA season seems to be a widespread dependence on trios of two foreign players and one Vietnamese player for both defense and offense. Both the Warriors and the Wings used this tactic successfully throughout their first games of the season. The Warriors’ Tim Guers and Jordan Young are the two foreign players on the team’s ‘trio,’ with each able to find the net both inside and outside the three-point line. On the Wings, veteran player Vincent Nguyen has earned himself a key position thanks to his ability to clear the court for his two foreign teammates, Makinde London and Jeremy Smith. The Warriors and the Wings met each other in Game 9 of the VBA Premier Bubble Games - Brought to you by NovaWorld Phan Thiet at the VBA-NTU … [Read more...] about Ho Chi Minh City Wings deal first loss to Thang Long Warriors in overtime
