ASEAN defense ministers meet with Japanese, Chinese counterparts
At the informal meeting between defense ministers of ASEAN and Japan, Japanese Minister of Defense Kishi Nobuo affirmed that Japan supports ASEAN’s centrality in regional cooperation mechanisms. He suggested the two sides strengthen defense cooperation in the fields that are important to ASEAN, including improvement of maritime security, human resource quality, cyber security, and response to impacts of climate change on regional security. At the meeting, Major General Nguyen Duc Tung, Director of the Department of Transport, reported on the progress of the implementation of Project VT21 on renovation of military marine transport in the 2021-2030 period. The brigade’s commander later reported on the task performance of the brigade in the first six months of this year, highlighting the unit’s completion of all assigned transport volume and assurance of absolute safety in all aspects. The dialogue was part of the ongoing official visit to the U.K. of Great Britain and North Ireland of Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue. At the event, the two senior officials expressed their delight at the positive and dynamic development of the Vietnam-U.K. strategic partnership, especially the effective maintenance of the bilateral defense cooperation. They wished to turn defense ties into a pillar of the two countries’ overall relations. ADMM to deepen ASEAN defense cooperation
Many cooperation initiatives have been implemented After the initiative to establish ADMM was approved at the 10th ASEAN Summit in Laos in November 2004, the first ADMM was successfully held in Malaysia in May 2006. Since then, ADMM has become an annual activity of the association’s defense ministers. It aims to promote regional peace and stability via dialogue and cooperation in defense and security; map out orientations for cooperation among ASEAN member countries and between ASEAN, its friends and dialogue partners.
