Thang Long Imperial Citadel (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - Managers, experts and scientists shared their views on cultural and natural heritage’s contributions to Vietnam's sustainable development as well as socio-economic development in localities at an international conference in Hanoi on March 24. The conference, themed “Promoting the role of world cultural and natural heritage in sustainable development in Vietnam,” was jointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO and the Hanoi People’s Committee . It formed part of activities marking 35 years since Vietnam ratified the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Bach Long Vy Island sees outstanding developments in three decades
The island has a special strategic position in terms of national defense, security and maritime economy. On November 18, 1992, the Prime Minister signed a decision to establish it as a district of Hai Phong. In March 1993, the first contingent of temporary district officials left the mainland to the island to perform their duty. Back then, the island was deserted without civil infrastructure facilities. Life there was hard and heavily depended on the mainland. Secretary of the district’s Party Committee Tran Quang Tuong said with the attention of the Party and the State, the local authorities and people have overcome myriad difficulties to develop the locality. According to him, an administrative area, a medical center, schools, parks and residential areas have been formed on the island, with a shelter built for ships to anchor. Exhibition highlights anti-aircraft artillery soldiers
Reportedly, it is one of the activities by the ADAF Service in order to celebrate the 70th traditional anniversary of anti-aircraft artillery soldiers. On April 1, 1953, General Vo Nguyen Giap, Commander-in-Chief of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) signed a decision to establish Anti-aircraft artillery Regiment 367 – the first kind of regiment in the VPA. The exhibition is divided into six parts, featuring over 300 photos, items and documents on the development and achievement of anti-aircraft artillery soldiers. In the resistance war against the Americans alone, anti-aircraft artillery soldiers shot down nearly 3.100 U.S. aircraft, accounting for 75% of total number of enemy aircraft lost in the country, contributing to the national salvation cause. Anti-aircraft artillery units together with radar, air force and missile forces set up a multi-layer defense system to firmly defend the sky of the country. Funding, relocation issues hit $56M Mekong Delta canal renovation
The Cho Gao Canal, spanning 28.5 km, runs through Chau Thanh District and several other areas in Tien Giang. It was dug by the French in 1876 to create a direct waterway route between Saigon and the Mekong Delta. Work to upgrade the canal began in 2021 and is expected to be finished this year. It involves dredging and lengthening the waterway by around 10 km and construction of new dykes, bridges and roads. Following the upgrade, vessels should find it easier to traverse the canal. A section of the canal bank is eroded in Binh Phan Commune. It is in fact eroded at hundreds of places, affecting over 2,000 families. Eight years ago the canal was upgraded at a cost of VND780 billion. A brick kiln was set up beneath the Cho Gao Bridge for the upgrade work. It has around a dozen workers, who pour cement brought by trucks into molds. Increasing labour cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand was discussed at a meeting between Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Phan Chi Thanh and Thai Deputy Minister of Labour Surachai Chaitrakulthong in Bangkok on March 24. Singapore promotes instant payment system connectivity in Southeast Asia

To enhance cross-border payments, the BIS Innovation Hub Singapore Centre developed the Nexus concept of a first-of-its-kind multilateral network connecting multiple domestic instant payment systems (IPS). Nexus prototype successfully connected the test IPS of the Eurosystem, Malaysia and Singapore, allowing payments to be sent across the three using only mobile phone numbers. In the next phase, BIS and the central banks of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand will jointly work towards connecting their domestic IPS through Nexus.
