Newly-announced ceiling prices insufficient to cover costs: project developers
Hoa Binh 5 Wind Farm in Bac Lieu Province. Project developers said the ceiling prices are insufficient for their farms to break even. — VNA/VNS Photo Many project developers are expressing concern that the ceiling prices for solar and wind energy set recently by the Ministry of Industry and Trade are not high enough to offset their costs. The representative of four wind farms in Gia Lai Province Tran Minh Tien remarked that the construction of the wind farms was completed a year ago but they have been idle due to the absence of official purchasing prices. "We have spent US$300 million to build our wind farms that have been lying dormant for one year. Meanwhile, interest payments and depreciated costs pile up day by day," said Tien. The introduction of the ceiling prices did not make the representative any happier because it is never easy to negotiate an agreement with Vietnam Electricity (EVN), under which the power corporation purchases electricity from the wind farms at … [Read more...] about Newly-announced ceiling prices insufficient to cover costs: project developers
Mischievous monkey in Ho Chi Minh City anesthetized, sent to rescue station
A male long-tailed monkey has been anesthetized and brought to a wildlife rescue station after it continuously annoyed residents in Ho Chi Minh City’s outskirt district of Cu Chi. The Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department on Friday confirmed that it had taken the monkey to the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station in the namesake district. Le Thi Gat, a resident in An Phu Commune, Cu Chi District, said three monkeys appeared in her neighborhood over a month ago. They regularly climbed to the rooftops of local residents’ houses and made loud noises. They also picked fruits, such as coconuts and longans, and threw them to the ground. In addition, they ate dozens of chicks and eggs of local households, Gat said, adding that she lost 10 chicks and 20 eggs to the moneys. “Monkeys jumped on the rooftop, caught chicks and ate them on high rubber trees,” Gat retold. According to Gat, the monkeys were earlier bred by a person renting a house in the commune and were released after … [Read more...] about Mischievous monkey in Ho Chi Minh City anesthetized, sent to rescue station

Quang Nam strives to conserve elephant species, habitat
Quang Nam (VNA) – Quang Nam’s elephant species and habitat conservation area has been making efforts to fulfill its mission of protecting a herd of eight wild elephants – considered one of the last populations of the endangered Asian elephant in the central province. The herd, including five matriarchs and calves, has lived in the 20,000ha conservation since its establishment in 2017. Mai Van Duong from the management board of the centre said people used to go in and out of this area a lot, encroaching on the elephants’ habitat. Since the establishment of the reserve, restricted human impact has helped improve the habitat and the animals’ health. To prevent conflicts that might affect the living environment of the herd, the management board has organised communications campaigns and technical training for residents and provided them with some equipment such as loudspeakers and solar lights. When the elephants appear, locals can use lights to make them return to the … [Read more...] about Quang Nam strives to conserve elephant species, habitat
Garment and footwear exports hit new peak at $71 billion
Last year, garment and footwear production brought in $71 billion from exports, including $44 billion from garments and $27 billion from leather, footwear, and handbags. According to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association and the Vietnam Leather, Footwear, and Handbag Association ( LEFASO ), 2022 was a challenging year. Particularly in the second half of the year, the number of orders dropped considerably. Despite this, the sector still reported double-digit growth. It is expected to be hard to maintain growth in the new year amidst the current challenges. Inflation in Vietnam's major partner countries like the US and the EU is holding back the consumption of unnecessary items like wooden furniture, garments, footwear, electronics, and plastics. Therefore, these sectors anticipate a quiet market until at least the end of Q1 2023. In the new year, the textile and garment sector is targeting $46-47 billion in export value, while the leather and footwear sector aims to gain … [Read more...] about Garment and footwear exports hit new peak at $71 billion
Responsive shift required in Vietnam’s energy policy
The global energy price issue is not resolved yet, but is Vietnam sluggish to alter its energy policy? Energy policy is crucial for all nations, but particularly for Vietnam given its ambitious aim of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. However, under the proposed Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8), it is still planned to import 55 million metric tonnes of coal by 2025 and 95 million metric tonnes by 2030, despite the abundance of alternative power sources in the nation. The PDP8 is now awaiting approval, but policymakers still need to examine the most fundamental aspects, including adequate and steady power, investment efficiency, and ensuring energy security in relation to the environment and national defence. Responsive shift required in Vietnam’s energy policy. Photo: Le Toan What do you believe will occur when Vietnam retains a significant coal power supply through the PDP8? The PDP8 consists of four volumes and over 830 pages, although the solution … [Read more...] about Responsive shift required in Vietnam’s energy policy
