SKC, a chemical unit under the energy-to-telecom conglomerate SK Group, said on September 25 that the factory of Ecovance, a joint venture between SKC and two other RoK partners, will be established in Vietnam's northeastern city of Hai Phong to manufacture polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), a biodegradable co-polymer widely used as feedstock for general plastics. The facility is set to go operational in 2025 and produce 70,000 tonnes of PBAT a year. On September 22, Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin came to Vietnam to attend the opening ceremony of Lotte Mall West Lake Hanoi. With an invetment of $643 million, this mall is currently the biggest project of Lotte that has become operational in Vietnam. Entering Vietnam in 1996, the group has opened shopping centres and supermarkets and then expanded operations to other fields such as hotels and cinemas. Lotte now has 19 member companies in Vietnam, Shin said as cited by Dau tu (Vietnam Investment Review). Lotte has reportedly channelled about $5 billion into Vietnam, and the figure is expected to keep rising. MAFRA revealed that the country plans to supply 2,000 tonnes of rice for three ASEAN member states, including Philippines (750 tonnes), Myanmar (750 tonnes) and Laos (500 tonnes) through the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) agreement. The joint rice reserve among ASEAN member states and the RoK , China and Japan aims to ensure food security and provide emergency support in a time of food shortage or natural disaster events. Each member country agrees to reserve an amount of rice in advance. It is a public reserve system that provides sales, lending, and donation in times of emergency.
