Eleven provinces and cities saw their traffic death toll decrease by over 20 percent, including Bac Giang, Bac Kan, Ninh Thuan, Da Nang, Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Phu Tho, Dak Lak, Binh Duong and Dong Thap. The National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) reports 2013 saw a total of 29,385 traffic accidents that killed 9,369 people and caused 29,500 injuries. Numbers of accidents, fatalities, and injuries were fewer than 2012 levels. Twenty-one provinces and cities enjoyed declines in all three criteria, including Ca Mau, Vinh Long, Tay Ninh, Dong Nai, Quang Nam, Bac Kan, Kon Tum, Vinh Phuc, and Hoa Binh. Traffic jams in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were reduced, with hotspots plummeting from 124 to 57 in Hanoi and no traffic jam lasting longer than 30 minutes in HCM City. In addition to transport policy reform, the Ministry of Public Security mobilized police forces to clear roadways and pavements, preventing avoidable obstructions. Hanoi Times - Close to 9,500 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam in the first three quarters of this year, killing 8,605 people and injuring 6,167 others, reported the National Committee for Traffic Safety (NCTS) at a conference in Hanoi. The figures represented decreases of 14% in the number of accidents and 13% in the number of fatalities compared to the same period last year. Up to 52 localities nationwide reported reductions in traffic accident fatality with the highest decreases seen in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak , and the southern provinces of Tay Ninh and Dong Thap. How do we curb the appalling number of road traffic accidents? (13-08-2007) Minister of Transport and Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety Ho Nghia Dung talked with Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper about potential solutions for Viet Nam's high traffic accident rate. Why has the number of traffic accidents, including serious accidents, been so high in the first six months of this year? The main reasons are a lack of awareness by the public about the need to obey traffic laws and poor management by the State. Rapid economic growth, in particular in the transport industry, which has grown at a rate of eight to nine per cent, has seen the number of vehicles on the roads increase significantly.
