A child with dengue fever at the HCM City Children’s Hospital. — VNA/VNS Photo HCM CITY — The HCM City health sector says it will take drastic measures to tackle possible dengue fever outbreaks, especially to reduce the number of severe cases and deaths. The HCM City Centre for Disease Control (HCDC) said the city has recorded a surge in dengue cases among children with a high rate of severity due to a delay in hospital admissions and improper or late treatment at home. The city has carried out a campaign since May 15 to mark the 12th ASEAN Dengue Day (June 15) to raise public awareness of the disease and precautions that need to be taken. It is calling on each individual to take simple measures like cleaning water containers, changing water in bottles, vases and tanks, and keeping the house tidy. Doctors said initial symptoms of dengue fever are quite similar to some viral infections and have warned that the onset of the disease can sometimes be the same as that of … [Read more...] about HCM City braces for dengue outbreaks as cases rise
Opportunities for e-commerce in Vietnam to boom
Illustrative image. (Photo: SGGP) According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung, Chairman of Vietnam E-commerce Association (Vecom), in 2021, despite being heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam's e-commerce still maintained a good growth momentum with an increase of about 20 percent and a scale of $16 billion. Keeping the growth momentum, Vietnam is now one of the countries with the largest e-commerce market size in the region, besides Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Vietnam's internet economy in 2021 grew by 31 percent compared to 2020 and reached a scale of $21 billion. Of which, the online retail sector enlarged by 53 percent and touched a scale of $13 billion. There are two waves that have contributed to the steady development of e-commerce in Vietnam in 2020 and 2021 and will be the driving force for the next period. By the end of 2021, the program had helped handle over 380 trillion VND in bad debt, or 47.9 percent of the country's entire bad debt since August 15, 2017. On average, some 5.67 trillion VND in bad debt was processed each month during the period, significantly higher than the 3.25 trillion VND per month prior to the implementation of the program. The program had helped recover 148 trillion VND or 38.94 percent of all bad debt among financial institutions, a marked improvement over the yearly average of 22.8 percent during the 2012-2017 period. A recent SBV report said the bad debt ratio among financial institutions was … [Read more...] about Gov’t asks for extension to bad debt program
Vietnam expecting to spend even more on imports
Vietnam expecting to spend even more on imports - illustration photo Southeast Asia is facing rising inflation, a problem that is exacerbated by the failure of energy and food prices to fall. Last month, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) tightened monetary policy for the third time since October to deal with inflation that is expected to heat up. According to analysts, the MAS has redefined the midpoint of the popular exchange rate policy band and slightly increased the slope of currency appreciation to help the Singapore dollar strengthen against the currencies of other countries. However, the MAS did not change the width of its policy band – a move the institution usually would take when markets are volatile. As a result, the Singapore dollar rose about 0.5 per cent to $1.35 after the MAS’ move. The agency considered the possibility that core inflation would pick up sharply in the coming months, before being revised later this year, due to the sharp increase in … [Read more...] about Vietnam expecting to spend even more on imports
