CAN THO - Tram Chim National Park in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap on Tuesday got a certificate from the Ramsar Secretary General in recognition of the country’s fourth and the world’s 2,000th site of the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering 7,600 hectares, Tram Chim is home to 250 types of water birds, 100 freshwater fish species and 190 higher plant breeds. In particular, the site has witnessed the return of 32 endangered bird species like sarus cranes (grus antigone). The Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap on May 22 held a ceremony to receive a certificate recognizing Tram Chim National Park as a Ramsar site of wetlands of international importance. The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, and has continued to provide a national framework for wetland preservation ever since. The national park, located in Tam Nong district, in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, is the fourth Ramsar site in Vietnam and the 2,000th in the world. The other Ramsar sites in the country are the Xuan Thuy Natural Wetland Reserve in the northern province of Nam Dinh, which was recognized in 1988; the Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake) Wetlands and Seasonal Floodplains in Cat Tien National Park, selected in 2005; and Ba Be National Park in Bac Kan northern province, recognized in 2011.
