No longer easy gains

Stock Market No longer easy gains By Trieu Duong Wednesday,  Feb 10, 2021,09:04 (GMT+7) No longer easy gains By Trieu Duong The sudden, shocking correction will definitely affect not only existing investors but also those intending to join the market, which may stall the money flow in the upcoming time - PHOTO: TRAN NGOC LINH After a period of hot growth and extensive cash flows in all markets, the drastic correction in mid-January will force stock investors to become more prudent if they are not to lose all the earnings from the recent strong rally. With the recent strong correction, up to 899 stocks had rallied against end-2020, with 235 stocks posting a price rise from 20% upwards. Of note, up to 40 stocks surged from 50% upwards, and some even recorded a double price rise after only 10 trading sessions of the first two weeks of January 2021. Strong money flows helped investors make easy profit with almost all stocks during the early days of the year, turning the stock market into the easiest money making channels over the past many years. Many new stock accounts have been opened, liquidity has surged and continuously made records, causing frequent overloads during the ends of the trading sessions on the Hochiminh Stock Exchange (HOSE) though the minimum trading lot was raised to 100 shares from the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, these developments seemed to be the warning signals for a correction, which immediately occurred afterwards. The drastic fall of the VN-Index on January 19, 2021 would probably be mentioned many years  afterwards, and may have caused quite a big panic among many investors, especially newcomers. The sudden, shocking correction will definitely affect not only existing investors but also those intending to join the market, which may stall the money flow in the upcoming time, especially when there are more warnings against asset bubbles or highly priced stocks. This is …

Real estate appeal remains amid tumult

A view of Trung Hoa-Nhan Chinh Urban Area in Cau Giay District, Ha Noi. — VNS Photo Thanh Hai Viet Nam has more real estate investment opportunities than other more mature Asia-Pacific markets, though certain difficulties remain. Real estate investors from Asia-Pacific countries with limited potential for real estate growth, such as Japan and South Korea, see extensive opportunities in Viet Nam, according to Matthew Powell, director of Savills Ha Noi. Increasing numbers of Japanese and South Korean investors are looking to the local market, assessing land options at the right price. Viet Nam’s overall potential is an advantage, but every investment depends on location and the particular industry. Most investors have their eyes on the two big cities of Ha Noi and HCM City, while others are expanding their horizons to localities such as Hai Phong. The main barrier is finding land at a reasonable price, which adds difficulty to foreign investors competing with local investors and developers. Overseas investors should also be aware of the potential difficulties in purchasing land, Powell said. Some domestic developers focus mainly on residential real estate, while specialist investors have nimbly pivoted to the burgeoning industrial and logistics sector from apartment or resort development. The cost of logistics in Viet Nam remain high compared to elsewhere in Asia-Pacific. Logistics are, however, gradually becoming more competitive due to new and improved infrastructure, including the construction of new airports in the south, new highways, and new ports. Such improvements are partly being driven by higher domestic consumer demand resulting from rising e-commerce and store visits. Increasing requirements for support infrastructure, cold storage, warehousing, and logistics will put these among the key investment areas in 2021. According to JLL Viet Nam, many Vietnamese developers are raising capital for large-scale development portfolios, which are …
