Ham Nghi was the 8th King of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 - 1945), but reigned for only one year (1884 - 1885). After the failure of a movement against the French colonial rule, he was captured and exiled to Algeria, then a colony of France, on December 12, 1888. While exiled in Algiers, he learned painting and sculpture techniques and dedicated his entire life to intense artistic activities as a painter and a sculptor. According to the French auction house Lynda Trouvé, this is the first time that such a large number of paintings by the late king is offered for sale. They belonged to Henri Aubé, a French military officer who was stationed in Hanoi between 1907 and 1909, and were discovered in the attic at his home. During a visit to Vietnam, grandchild of King Ham Nghi, Dr. Amandine Dabat, revealed that there are about 100 of his paintings that are still preserved. Selfishness kills my Vietnamese Dream
I have lived in many countries and I am aware of the flaws of France, namely French people are very unsatisfied people and complain often. I was also aware of the obvious flaws of Vietnam for having visited it a bit, namely it does not have the same infrastructure or quality items as we have in France. There would be the language barrier and a few other lifestyle changes. But none of that seemed insurmountable. Vietnam also has some interesting advantages such as the ability to get things done quickly, very good food, a fast-paced development, and a good job market. I settled in Vietnam almost seven years ago with a plan to stay but I now doubt this plan more and more. Why? Because of the utter selfishness that is damaging Vietnam. Let me explain with some common examples. I often heard that there is rampant corruption in Vietnam but never really believed it. By now I have seen, heard or read about it in many administrations in Vietnam, involving many politicians including the past … [Read more...] about Selfishness kills my Vietnamese Dream
Vietnamese-born filmmaker wins best director at Cannes
The movie is a lustrous homage to French cuisine that was loved by many international critics but seemed to leave most local pundits cold. He thanked his star Juliette Binoche, saying she was "quite extraordinary in the film." The prize for best first film went to "Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell" from Vietnamese writer/director Pham Thien An, which premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight sidebar. The picture is the only Vietnamese-language film at the festival this year. It tells the story of Thien, who takes responsibility of accompanying his sister-in-law’s body to their hometown after she dies in an accident, and taking care of his newly orphaned nephew. French director Justine Triet became only the third woman ever to win the festival's top prize with the icy tale "Anatomy of a Fall", led by a riveting performance from German actress Sandra Hueller. Triet used her acceptance speech to slam the government of President Emmanuel Macron for the "shocking" way it imposed a … [Read more...] about Vietnamese-born filmmaker wins best director at Cannes
