Two children from Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam have died following suspected dog bites. Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital confirmed on Wednesday it had recently received two young patients in critical conditions. Doctors believed that the patients had been bitten by dogs and were infected with rabies. In the first case, three-year-old L.B.T. showed symptoms, such as vomiting and convulsions, before his family took him to a district hospital for examination. T. was then transferred to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for emergency treatment, with symptoms including respiratory failure, prolonged convulsions, profuse sputum secretion, and dread of wind and water. Family members said T. often played with dogs and cats, and that a dog raised by the family recently died of unknown causes. Doctors diagnosed T. with rabies. Workshop highlights importance of impact-based disaster forecasting
Deputy head of the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration (VNMHA) Hoang Duc Cuong said that the workshop, jointly held by the VNMHA and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in response to the World Meteorological Day (March 23), will provide international experiences on forecasting and warning based on practical impacts in the world and Vietnam, contributing to forming processes and measures to effectively forecast disaster impacts in Vietnam at present and in future. Efforts exerted to protect gray-shanked douc langurs in Phu Yen

Within the framework of a research and conservation programme of the primates in the central and Central Highlands regions, GreenViet, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) in Vietnam and the provincial Forest Protection Department and Management Board of Dong Xuan Forest have jointly conducted field surveys and discovered many of the mammals in forest areas in Phu Mo commune. The surveys, conducted from February 10-15, aims to collect information on population, distribution, and habitat of gray-shanked douc langurs. Hanoi sees rising chickenpox cases
Hanoi has recorded 70 chickenpox cases over the past week, raising the city’s total number of patients to 548 since early this year. According to the Hanoi Centre for Disease Control, children at nursery accounted for 36.5 percent of cases and primary school children 38 percent respectively. The disease has hit 18 among 30 local districts with Chuong My hardest hit with 230 patients, followed by Me Linh, Ba Vi, Nam Tu Liem and My Duc. But the city has seen no deaths related to chickenpox so far this year. More schools in Chuong My District have recorded cases of chickenpox, including Phu Nghia Nursery School and Van Vo Primary School.
