With nearly 20,000ha yielding 30,000 tonnes each year, Son La currently tops the list of Arabica coffee planting localities nationwide. Its coffee plantations are concentrated in the city of Son La and the two districts of Mai Son and Thuan Chau. In the past, Son La Province exported mostly raw coffee beans. In the past five years, however, domestic coffee companies have increased investment in processing to supply the market with various kinds of products, such as those used for modern-style coffee makers, traditional-style coffee filters, and instant coffee, under brands that have become familiar to consumers, such as Zabica and Minh Tien. Son La province promotes safe farm produce export practice
A majority of its 350,000 ha of agricultural land is arable, helping Son La develop highly valued crops and diversify farm produce. Son La is focusing on restructuring agriculture and modeling the crop structure in line with the local soil potential, workforce, and consumption practices. The province is moving toward cultivating fruits tree on sloping land, developing cooperatives, and attracting businesses to invest in agriculture. The key is to create a value chain encompassing production, supply, processing, consumption, and promotion of safe farm produce export practices. As a result, the fruit tree cultivation area in Son La turns out 250,000 tons per year. Back in 2014, when La Van Phong had just graduated from university, the idea of ecotourism flashed across his mind. With the assistance of like-minded friends, he established the Quynh Nhai district Ecotourism Group in 2015, which transformed into Quynh Nhai Fishery and Ecotourism Cooperative in 2016. “Our startup capital was only 20 million VND (870 USD). Due to the financial shortage, we struggled to organise tours and had to hire boats.
