Almost 100 people died during the five-day Reunification and Labour Day holiday. 96 killed in road accidents during five-day holiday A total of 135 road accidents occurred from April 27 to May 1, left 96 dead and 96 injured according to a report by the National Traffic Safety Committee. 26 road accidents occurred on May 1 alone, killing 16 and injuring 17 people. There were two railway accidents with two deaths, the report said. The report also said that drunk-driving, speeding, overloading and dangerous driving across lanes were commonplace during the holiday. The committee blamed low-quality bus services for a number of accidents. The traffic police dealt with a total of 11,968 violations during the holiday and collected nearly VND15.3bn (USD657,000) in fines. A foreign woman died and several of her companions were seriously injured in a central Vietnam road accident Friday. Information so far released about the accident says a group of foreigners whose nationalities have not been revealed, were driving two motorbikes on National Highway 1A when their vehicles were hit by a tractor trailer moving in the same direction. The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. in Dien Ban Town in the central province of Quang Nam, home to several attractions including the ancient Hoi An Town. A female tourist died on the spot while her companions, whose number has not been specified, were hospitalized with serious injuries. A road safety film contest was also announced on the same day. Statistics from the World Health Organisation show that over 1.2 million people die and 50 million people are injured in traffic accidents each year across the globe. The damage caused by traffic accidents cost most countries nearly 3% of GDP. Without stronger measures, fatalities could reach 1.9 million in 2020.
