Tam’s winning marks a milestone in Vietnamese boxing history as she has become the first Vietnamese boxer to enter a world championship final. Notably, Tam’s opponent Wassila in the semifinals won the French National Champion seven times and won two bronze medals in European boxing. Before the victory, Tam also won convincingly the Spanish boxer ranked 9th in Europe Fuertes Fernandez Laura in the quarterfinals and the two-time world champion Nazym Kyzaibay in the knockout stage. In the final, Tam will play Zareen Nikhat of India, who won the championship in the 52 kg category last year. Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam beat Botswana athlete Modukanele Lethabo Bokamoso in the Round of 16 of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in India on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. With a height advantage, Tam showed a preemptive strategy. She scored an almost absolute point in each of the first two rounds of Tuesday’s showdown. In the third round, Lethabo Bokamoso appeared to be physically weaker and even kissed the canvas once. In the end, Tam won 5-0, including four rounds with absolute points of 30. Her opponent in the quarterfinals is Spain’s Fuertes Fernandez Laura, who ranked ninth in Europe in 2022. The fight will take place at 7:30 pm on Wednesday (Vietnam time). Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam trounced Spanish rival Laura Fuertes Fernandez 5-0 in the women’s 50kg quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in India on Wednesday. From the beginning of Wednesday’s match, Tam showed her dominance over Fernandez. Tam did not allow her opponent to approach while launching single and continuous attacks. With abundant physical strength and good stature, Tam confused the European No. 9 and took the lead in the showdown. Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam lost 0-5 to world defending champion Nikhat Zareen of India in the light flyweight final match of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi on Sunday evening, bringing home a silver medal. Before the match, Zareen was considered the great hope for the host to secure the championship title. She was the defending champion in the 52kg class before moving down to the 50kg weight category. The first round saw Zareen, who received great cheers from home spectators, launch many quality right-handed punches toward Tam. Tam earned the victory in the round of 16 in the 48-50 kilogram category, in which Nazym won the world championship in 2014 and 2016. Nazym was also crowned Asian champion in the 50-52 kilogram category in 2021 and finished third in Asia in the 48-50 kilogram category last year.
