(VOVworld) - The 5th International workshop on poverty reduction has been held in Ho Chi Minh city with the participation of researchers and university lecturers from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, India, and Vietnam. Presentations showed that countries have recorded significant economic development results, but poverty has remained a global threat and is a cause of social disturbance and insecurity. Following the global financial crisis, developing countries have had to struggle with high unemployment rates and low economic growth. The colloquium, now in its 9th edition since 1998, will gather some 15 practising and experienced journalists and experts from Asia and Europe. Estimates by ESCAP published in its Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2011 show that high food price inflation kept an additional 19.4 million in poverty in the region last year. This comprised 15.6 million who would otherwise have emerged from poverty and 3.8 million who were pushed below the poverty line. "Such slowdown in 2010 alone may result in a one-year delay for countries in the region in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger," the Survey notes. High food prices can keep people in poverty or push them below the poverty line if they are net buyers of staple food. However, net sellers of staple food can see an increase in their incomes. In general, unexpected rises in staple food prices have an immediate negative effect on the urban poor as most are net buyers of staple food items. CPV- The percentage of people living below the newly redefined poverty line of USD 1.25 a day in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia fell from 56 percent in 1990 to 18 percent only fifteen years later, according to a new United Nations progress report released in September, 2008. These two regions have already met the Millennium Development Goals' target of reducing 1990 levels of extreme poverty by half. Progress in reducing extreme poverty was slower in Southern Asia however, where the pace will need to accelerate for the region to be able to meet the MDG target. In India, for example, poverty decreased from 52 to 41 percent between 1990 and 2005. Because of population growth, however, the number of people living in extreme poverty actually rose by 20 million during this period.
