Modi takes home-grown vaccine as India widens immunisation drive

BHUBANESWAR -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was inoculated with the first dose of a home-grown coronavirus vaccine on Monday, kicking off an expansion of the country’s immunisation campaign as infections rise in some big states. People above 60, and those who are 45 or more and suffering from certain medical conditions, are now eligible for the vaccinations. But some inoculation centres reported issues with the government’s Co-Win portal used to coordinate the drive, which could slow its progress. India, which has reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases after the United States, has so far vaccinated 12 million health and front-line workers since starting its immunisation programme in mid-January. It wants to cover 300 million of its 1.35 billion people by August. “I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine,” 70-year-old Modi said on Twitter, posting a picture of him getting the shot at a government hospital in New Delhi. “Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!” The government said last week it would let people choose their vaccination centres, effectively letting beneficiaries pick either the home-grown COVAXIN shot or the AstraZeneca vaccine, unlike earlier. The inoculation campaign has run slower than expected due to a reluctance of health and front-line workers to take COVAXIN, which was approved without late-stage efficacy data. Only about 11% of vaccinated people have opted for the product developed by Bharat Biotech and the state-run Indian Council of Medical Research. Bharat Biotech has said efficacy data from a late-stage trial on nearly 26,000 volunteers who took COVAXIN will be out soon. Hanoi – safe investment destination post Covid-19

The Hanoitimes - In 2020, Hanoi targets to attract over US$5 billion in FDI, while investment promotion activities would focus on new markets, particularly member countries of the CPTPP and the EVFTA. The first conference of this kind was held in 2016 when the city attracted 23 projects with investment capital of VND36.91 trillion (US$1.58 billion). In another conference one year later, the number of projects given an investment license increased to 48 worth VND74.36 trillion (US$3.19 billion). Notably, the 2018 edition of this conference, with 71 projects worth VND397 trillion (US$17.06 billion), laid the foundation for Hanoi to claim the top spot nationwide in two consecutive years of 2018 and 2019 in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction. In 2019, Hanoi attracted US$8.67 billion in FDI, the highest figure after 30 years of the open door policy. The actual FDI amounted to US$6.9 billion, up three-fold compared to that of in 2018. Japan is currently the largest investor to Hanoi with US$10.9 billion, followed by Singapore with US$8.2 billion, and South Korea with US$6.3 billion. This results reflect strong efforts by the local authorities in promoting investments and improving the business environment, Phuong said. Vietnam aims for GDP per capita of $5,000 by 2025, developed country status by 2045: 13th Party Congress’s Resolution

The Communist Party is aiming for Vietnam to reach GDP per capita of $5,000 by 2025 and to be a developed country by 2045. Party delegates voted to adopt the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress at the final session of the Congress held on February 1, 2021. The goals are part of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress held from January 25 to February 1, the entirety of which has just been released by the Office of the Party Central Committee. The Resolution noted the highlight of the 12th tenure was the successful handling of the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in significant economic achievements – including stable macroeconomics, controlled inflation and high GDP growth, while people’s living standards were improved. The fight against corruption, loss and waste was intensified, while the socio-political situation remained stable, foreign relations deepened and Vietnam’s profile on the international stage grew. However, numerous shortcomings – including slow modernisation and industrialisation, shifting in the growth model, limited competitiveness and quality and productivity of the economy, inadequate adaptation to climate change and environment protection demands, drawbacks in Party building and rectification, that science and technology has not been the driving engine of socio-economic growth and the lives of certain groups of people remain difficult – of the 12th tenure have been identified in the Resolution.
