The Hanoi elite citizen is not only known as a front-line health worker against the Covid-19 pandemic but a "hero" with a compassionate heart for HIV/AIDS patients. In more than 24 years of wearing a white coat, for Dr. Pham Ba Hien, 48, Director of Dong Da General Hospital, the greatest joy is to see his patients discharged safe and sound and back to normal life. Nearly three years have been a challenge for healthcare workers since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. Hien who is bestowed an Elite Citizen of Hanoi in 2022 and other "soldiers in white coats" have dedicated themselves and sacrificed in silence to achieve a peaceful life for the population. Davos 2023: Climate change leads to more malaria, tuberculosis up in a recession
Climate change is increasing malaria infections, the executive director of the world's biggest health fund said in Davos on Monday. Huge surges in malaria infections followed recent floods in Pakistan and cyclones in Mozambique in 2021, said Peter Sands, the executive director of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. "Whenever you have an extreme weather event it's fairly common to have a surge of malaria," he said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos. The increase in extreme weather events, and the resulting large pools of standing water that attract mosquitoes, are leaving poorer populations vulnerable. He said climate change was also changing the geography of mosquitoes. The highlands of Africa, in Kenya and Ethiopia, are now succumbing to malaria because of a shift in the low temperatures that once made the area unsustainable for mosquitoes. Sands runs the world's largest global fund, which invests in fighting tuberculosis, malaria … [Read more...] about Davos 2023: Climate change leads to more malaria, tuberculosis up in a recession
China says Covid deaths, severe cases have fallen over 70% since peak
The figures, published on the center's website, come after a prominent government scientist said over the weekend that 80% of China's 1.4 billion population had already been infected, making the possibility of a big Covid-19 rebound over the next two or three months remote. China abruptly ended its strict zero-Covid policy in early December after three years and infections surged across the world's most populous country. While officials have said infections have peaked, some global experts have warned about the possibility of a surge in cases in rural areas less equipped to deal with them as millions of Chinese travel home for family reunions during the ongoing Lunar New Year holiday. The CDC said the number of critically ill patients in China peaked on January 4 at 128,000 cases and fell to 36,000 cases by January 23. The number of deaths in hospitals, meanwhile, reached a daily peak of 4,273 on January 4 and fell to 896 by Jan. 23. Visits to fever clinics fell 96.2%, from a … [Read more...] about China says Covid deaths, severe cases have fallen over 70% since peak
Chinese pray for health in Lunar New Year as Covid death toll rises
Queues stretched for about one kilometre (a half-mile) outside the iconic Lama temple in Beijing, which had been repeatedly shut before COVID-19 restrictions ended in early December, with thousands of people waiting for their turn to pray for their loved ones. One Beijing resident said she wished the year of the rabbit will bring "health to everyone". "I think this wave of the pandemic is gone," said the 57-year-old, who only gave her last name, Fang. "I didn’t get the virus, but my husband and everyone in my family did. I still think it's important to protect ourselves." Earlier, officials reported almost 13,000 deaths related to COVID in hospitals between January 13 and 19, adding to the nearly 60,000 in the month or so before that. Chinese health experts say the wave of infections across the country has already peaked. China on Jan. 14 reported nearly 60,000 COVID-related deaths in hospitals between Dec. 8 and Jan. 12, a huge increase from the 5,000-plus deaths reported … [Read more...] about Chinese pray for health in Lunar New Year as Covid death toll rises
The Year of the Tiger roared like no other
As the Year of the Tiger makes its final roars, and we welcome the Year of the Cat, it is a good time to look back at a year that brought us back to humanity and recount the little things that made us feel human again. In 2020 and 2021, Ho Chi Minh City, like most places around the world, was a difficult place to be. Most of us were locked in our homes or apartments for up to six months, and life was very challenging for everyone. COVID-19 brought Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam to a standstill, and the memories of this time are etched in our memory forever. But 2022 saw the Year of the Tiger enter into our lives with a roar. The pandemic was put under control and the numbers of sick and dying people were rapidly falling. It was around this time that most people in Ho Chi Minh City began getting second and third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and getting back to school and work. Ironically, my year began in the hospital. For me, COVID-19 and social distancing had inflicted a … [Read more...] about The Year of the Tiger roared like no other
World’s oldest known person dies aged 118: spokesman to AFP
Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away. She died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, spokesman David Tavella said. "There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home, told AFP. The sister was long feted as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 last year left her the longest-lived person on Earth. Guinness World Records officially acknowledged her status in April 2022. Randon was born in the year New York opened its first subway and when the Tour de France had only been staged once. She grew up in a Protestant family as the only girl among three brothers, living in the southern town of Ales. One of her fondest memories was the return of two of her brothers at the end of World War I, she told AFP in an interview on her 116th birthday. "It was … [Read more...] about World’s oldest known person dies aged 118: spokesman to AFP
Hong Kong returns to lead most Asian markets higher
Most Asian markets rose Thursday as the majority returned from the Lunar New Year break on an optimistic note, with inflation slowing and central banks hinting at a lighter approach to tackling prices. Hong Kong led the way again, helped by hopes that China's reopening will fuel a strong recovery this year, while Bloomberg News said travel and box office numbers for the holidays were encouraging. But uneven earnings from tech giants largely kept sentiment in check and saw Wall Street end on a soft note, with the Nasdaq in the red. Traders are now awaiting the release of US growth data on Thursday and the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge of inflation Friday. Still, Asia continued to outperform after a strong start to the year. Next week, the Federal Reserve will make its latest policy decision since slowing its pace of rate hikes in December after four straight 75 basis-point increases. Speculation has been building in recent weeks that the bank could take its foot … [Read more...] about Hong Kong returns to lead most Asian markets higher
