Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - The National Environment Board (NEB) of Thailand has endorsed stricter measures to combat air pollution caused by PM2.5 , ordering all 17 provinces in the North to halt burning activities until the end of April. Centre for Air Pollution Mitigation Spokesperson Siwaporn Rugsiyanon said that from January to March, the number of hotspots in the country increased to 56,439 points nationwide, with 31,719 in the North, of which 80% were in forest land and 15% in farming zones. To address the problem, the NEB has proposed a zero-burning policy in both forest and agricultural zones in the 17 northern provinces. If the situation worsens, the agency could consider ordering the closure of as many as 92 forest parks that operate under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to mitigate the situation. Thailand aims to attract more high-spending Muslim tourists
Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Department of Tourism (DoT) is designing plans to promote itself as a friendly destination for Muslim tourists, local media reported. The department and the private sector in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Phuket have held discussions on Islamic tourism to seek measures to attract more high-end visitors from the Middle East. According to Director of the DoT’s Tourist Attractions Development Division Athuek Phrasenmoon, Muslim tourists are now a main target group for the global tourism industry due to this being the fastest-growing market with high spending power. Athuek said Thailand saw 11.8 million international arrivals last year, more than 400,000 of whom came from the Middle East , up 65% compared to the same period in 2019. Thailand to produce tuberculosis test kit
DMSc-TB FastAmp (TB-LAMP) kit (Photo: AEC Healthcare) Bangkok (VNA) - The Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) under the Thai Ministry of Public Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AEC Healthcare on the transfer of DMSc-TB FastAmp (TB-LAMP) kit production technology, aiming to support tuberculosis (TB) prevention and control. DMS chief Dr Supakit Sirilak said there are at least 150 new cases of TB detected per 100,000 people every year in Thailand , citing data collected by the Department of Disease Control. This means over 105,000 new cases are found annually in the country, he noted. A fast and accurate diagnosis method can be helpful. However, the price can exceed 300 baht (8.76 USD), higher than the 200-baht subsidy provided by the National Health Security Office. Therefore, the development of the TB-LAMP kit can improve diagnosis and affordability. Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn on May 20 issued a royal decree on the dissolution of the parliament, paving the way for a general election to be held in May. The decree took effect on the same day. According to the Thai constitution, polls must be held between 45 and 60 days after the dissolution of parliament. Air pollution soared in Beijing on Wednesday as the Chinese capital was hit by a huge sandstorm, and dust also shrouded other parts of the country in a sickly orange haze. One Pillar Pagoda in Khon Kaen province – symbol of Vietnam-Thailand friendship
The event was co-organized by local authorities, the Vietnamese Consulate General and the association of Thai people of Vietnamese origin in the province. The pagoda was built in the Thailand-Vietnam Friendship Park in Khon Kaen per wish of overseas Vietnamese, and has become an attractive tourist destination, according to President of the association Dang Thi Gai. Consul General Chu Duc Dung briefed the participants on the original One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi, recognized by the Asia Book of Records for its unique architecture. Khon Kaen’s Deputy Governor Chanchai Sornsriwichai stressed that pagoda is not only a spiritual highlight of local residents, but also an attractive tourist site. Bangkok (VNA) – Thai officials announced that they had found a cylinder of Caesium-137 that went missing from a power plant in Sri Maha Pho district at a steel foundry in Prachinburi province, 150km east of Bangkok, reported The Nation newspaper. Ronnarong Nakornjinda, Governor of Prachinburi province, said that during the inspection of steel factories in the province on March 19, officials detected readings of radioactivity at the province’s largest steel foundry, in Kabin Buri district. The readings came from scrap metal that had been compressed into cubes ready to be smelted. Officials ordered the foundry to halt operations and all employees were asked to leave the facility. A perimeter has been set up to bar access to outsiders. An initial investigation of smelted material at the foundry found traces of Caesium-137 , he said. HCMC family with 82 dogs fined for pollution
Ward 9 authorities said they made the decision to fine the family living on Hoang Dieu Street for discharging 10 times the permitted level of wastewater. They had hired an independent firm to collect samples of wastewater discharged from the house. Most of the 82 dogs in the 26-square-meter street house are puppies or sick dogs that had been abandoned. Neighbors have repeatedly complained to the authorities about odors, noise and excrement. The family used to directly dump all the dogs' excrement into the sewage system in front of the house.
